I’ve always had a image in my head of my 70 Camaro. A darker (than OEM) blue hue. Marks looks just like I always pictured.

We need some more Nova shots , videos even

Love seeing build threads like this. So much knowledge and ideas. Building a 6.0 for my Chevelle. Wanted to do this for a long time. Scrounging up parts and looking for deals.

It's because Mexico is such a lonnnnnnnnngggg drive from Canada, just for a few IG videos of boosty pulls!

It's really just because I drive mine alone a lot, and don't even own a GoPro, or have a YouTube following or anything.. so there just is no means or draw to video stuff instead of just driving it! Haha.

But I do really want to get a professional mountain top photoshoot of the Nova (close photographer friend has offered "anytime, you just let me know"), as well as some proper rolling footage of the thing. Mainly because I really don't even know what it looks or sounds like just cruising or rolling under full noise... I'm always in the driver seat haha.

Gorgeous car, and a very sedate color too. Looks to be in great shape, and an awesome place to start. I second that motion of a build thread with LOTS OF PICS!!

You mean you're not self obsessed with video and photos like I am? 🤣 Please prioritize that photo sesh with your photography buddy - I'd love to see glamour shots.

My first car. Had it 26 years. Original color. Paint is 25 years old. Would like to get it painted again and some a little body work done. Needs updated so I can drive it more. Bigger breaks, OD trans, LS.

I ordered a new steering box for the car too... a performance/good box has been on the list for damn near a decade, and specifically one from Lee's, so I finally decided I had to pull the trigger. It's a 12:1 muscle car box with 35lb valving, and I'm going to add a P/S fluid cooler to the driver's side front bumper cutout just to reduce the heatsoak under the hood and help this box live as happily as it can.

The cooler I have on order is a Setrab 250mm 14-row unit, which is slim and side horizontal ports, and about 12.75"x5.5" in overall size.

Looks good. Where did you source the box AND Setrab cooler? Aren’t those coolers hi end units?

The box was direct from Lee's Power Steering. Surprisingly, Lee's was the only place that didn't have a "sorry, backordered with no ETA" reply. It was about a 4 week wait for Lee's to build, test, and ship the box.

The cooler is definitely on the high end, and this is one of several different Setrab coolers that I've bought from ImprovedRacing.. they seem to have the best selection and pricing on these coolers, as well as the cooler options always being in stock. And, shipping to Canada from them was exceptionally reasonable, which really does help and add up these days.

It’s good to know about Iproved Racing stocking them. Have you “heard” anything about Earls Coolers? I believe they came out with a new line of them about 2-5 years ago. They look decent, though a little pricey (to me, I’m CHEAP)

when do we get treated to your next round of improvements? I know I’m looking forward to it

thanks,
jim

I think I may have posted about it a while back when researching engine oil coolers, but I can't see any discernible differences between the Earl's and Setrab coolers. I know Setrab is "Made in Sweden", but from all the pics I've Google'd.. they look pretty damn similar to me, even in pricing as well (both are higher than other alternatives). If you assume they're similar design but actually are made by different vendors... from all the pics I've seen, keeping in mind the possibility of material difference, I bet they'll work similarly enough given the same overall cooler size. It's not like there's a massive difference in technology, like if the Setrab had turbulators and the Earl's didn't.

I did go for a long highway drive yesterday thru some windy mountain passes, and the radiator fan didn't even turn on unless stopped at a light for longer than a few minutes. I was consistently getting coolant temps in the 170-180*F range (have a 160*F thermostat) while moving, however my engine oil temp was always between 220-240*F, sometimes spiking 250*F after a sustained uphill boosty pull.... so I need to add that oil cooler I originally bought but never ended up installing (appropriately, it was an Earl's cooler haha). More on that drive to follow in an upcoming post.

As for a comparison between Setrab and Earl's, this is why I think they'd at the very least perform similarly.....

Earl's cooler......

Setrab cooler......

Yeah, they do look similar. Have you seen or used EARLS UltraPro PTFE hoses? The black is trick. Light and extremely flexible. Very easy to cut and assemble. I have no idea how Earls wants their UP SS hose cut. I couldn’t ever find any videos demonstrating proper technique

I've used Earl's UltraPro hose everywhere in the engine bay of the twin turbo setup on the car... super simple home-assembly hose end, ribbed and ridiculously flexible hose, and seems friendly to all petro-based liquids. I had a super easy time assembling all my hose ends, and never once had a leak or anything that needed to be re-done. It's so easy that there's really no need to even touch braided stainless anymore. Even for a high-pressure power steering line, I'll just measure the length and have the local hydraulic fittings place crimp a 3500psi hose together. Make life easier for yourself!

I have the black braided hose in a -6 I went to buy more and they don’t make it anymore. Only the SS version in -6.

Since I couldn’t find any assembly videos of SS UltraPro,I started searching for the black NOS I got some about two weeks ago. Jegs was the only place that I could find it

What sizes did you use doing your TT plumbing ?

I seem to remember that -6 wasn't available in the black UltraPro hose.. only -8AN and up. My turbo feeds are -4, my turbo drains are -10 (wish I had gone to -12, might change later), power steering cooler lines will be -10, and future engine oil cooler lines will be -10 too.

Looks like my Ebay one. I use the same one as a trans cooler as well.
Oil cooler lines are -10AN.

Also, I went with a solid aluminum turbo oil return tube. I believe that takes some of the heat out of the oil before it reaches the sump.

If I did it again, I'd get a higher pressure oil pump to make up for the pressure losses through the cooler.

The fan is PWMd closed loop to the oil temp.

A small update from a while ago... I wanted to give the interior of the car a bit more of a 'classic' feel, which meant going back to a good 'ol Hurst chrome shift lever and ball ****.

Next up was a new steering box, but in order to install it I had to pull the steering column.. which was a perfect time to rebuild my tilt column and figure out why the tilt mechanism was nice and tight, but the steering wheel would wobble all over the place.

At first glance the top column shaft bearing looked ok.....

But as I removed it, the cage was damn near ready to disintegrate, and the ***** were falling out too easily...

Then I started finding loose *****, and chunks of bearing race on the bottom...

And here was the bottom bearing, or what was left of it...

Here is the top and bottom steering shaft bearings....

I ordered two new GM steering column bearings, and reassembled....
