Yes you have to drop your headers, no you don't have to remove the bellhousing. Not difficult to remove the TT/Tranny.

You have to drop the whole rearend (transaxle) + control arms out of the vehicle with the torque tube. It's a much bigger PITA than doing a fbody.

It's not the easiest that's for sure. You're going to need to remove your exhaust and X-pipe plus the headers as they're likely in the way of your torque tube to bellhousing bolts. Then basically pull your shifter, unbolt your rear lower control arms and shocks at the top, unbolt the rear cradle mounting bolts and lower down the whole rear cradle/suspension/differential/transmission/torque tube as a unit. On it's way down you reach through the shifter hole to pull the wiring harness off of the clips on the torque tube. Once it's lowered part way you can remove the bellhousing to torque tube bolts, slide it back which pulls the input shaft of the torque tube out from your clutch. Once that's out you can lower it all the rest of the way and remove from under the car. Then it's just a matter of seperating the torque tube from the trans and the trans from the diff and then you can take it in to be repaired. For a good writeup just search for "dope's clutch install" for a C5. You're basically doing all of those steps minus replacing the clutch. Although if I had the whole driveline out I would swap the clutch unless it's relatively low miles on it.

It's not fun but with the write up mentioned above my brother, dad, and I did it in a day. The write up is very detailed with great pictures. Make sure you have at least one person to help as it would be very hard to line some of it back up by yourself. Do it, you will learn a lot about the car.

I had SLP long tubes on my 02 Z06 and I DID NOT have to remove them to take out the tranny. The torque tube, trans, and diff come out as one piece. It's pretty easy just takes some time.

The F-body is a walk in the park.

Never did a C5 Vette before but it looks alot more labor intensive, requiring
some patience.

I never removed my headers(LG Pros) nor torque tube when I pulled my trans. Just the X pipe an catback. I put a jackstand to hold the Trans up, removed the cradle. then lower the Trans enough to slide the Diff out. then Slide the trans out. I did this one jack stands.

Dont forget the shifter, an if you lowering the torque tube. keep an eye on the intake manifold so it dont bash your firewall.

Something like this

Headers is 50/50 when it comes to removing them to get to the bolts to the bell housing for the vette. Like others have said A F-Body is cake to our C5Z's.

It would seem having a nice lift and a transmission jack would make the job a little easier.

I didnt have to remove my Headers. I only have to unbolt them when I pull the clutch. As far as pulling everything from the car its actually simple once you have done it a time or two. I can get the whole thing pulled in a couple of hours without a lift. it takes longer to jack the car up and unbolt the exhaust and heat shield than anything else.
