Default My C5 Z06 Project

Little background on me, I'm currently US Army Infantry deployed to Afghanistan, I have roughly 2-3 weeks left before I'm done with this deployment and 4 weeks, give or take a day or two, until I'm home to drive the Z06 I recently bought. This was my dream car when I was 16, and now that I'm 24 I can finally afford it.

After a lot of online searching, I found a 2004 Z06 with 20355 miles at a good price. Got financing lined up (2.24% interest!) and had it delivered to my parents house on April 20.

Before I got the car, I knew it wouldnt stay stock for long. I have a bunch of parts at the house, and even more on the way. I'll be getting it all put together in early June when I'm home.

Mod List:
TSP 228R Cam
PRC LS6 Stage 1 Ported Heads
Kook's 1-7/8" Longtubes
Kook's Xpipe (magnaflow cats)
Yella Terra 1.7RR
PAC .600" Lift Springs
TSP 7.400" Pushrods
Borla XR1 Catback
Vararam Intake
Vararam Powertube
MGW Shifter

...and of course all the gaskets, bolts, lubes, and oils neccessary for the swap! Will get it dyno tuned also, hoping for 450 at the rear wheels.

Heres a few pics of the car, I'll post pics of the parts as soon as I can get some sent to me!

Within the next 6 months or so, budget depending I'm looking to go with new wheels/tires. Probably 18x9.5 front, 19x11 rear; also a coilover setup. Of course with rims that size, the stock brakes are going to look crappy so a C6 Z06 brake upgrade is also planned.

My goal starting out was a n/a build with good power and daily driveability. I think once its said and done, tuned to perfection, I'll get exactly what I'm looking for!

Pics of parts to come soon!

Nice! Good to hear your coming back soon! I would say the Yella terra's not needed on factory heads. To get 450 with your setup your going to need a well ported fast setup. I have seen this combo go around 430 usually with an ls6 intake. I would have your heads milled down a bit too with that cam. Like 61-62cc cheap power and torque. Also think about a clutch you may need it at your new levels fairly soon. But it will be a nice bump in power for sure! I am doing heads, cam, intake in my c5z06 too i'll let you know what mine puts down in a couple weeks.

Heads are milled for a compression bump to 11.2:1, I forgot to mention that part. I knew the Yella Terra's werent a neccessity, but I got a good deal on them so I figured why not go for it.

The clutch I will replace when the time comes, no worries still plenty of budget leftover. Not paying taxes for a year kicks ***!

Looks like you're plan is set. I would definitely be ready for a new clutch. My stock 30K mile clutch started slipping with only about 1K miles on my H/C setup. I went with a McLeod twin and it holds great.

I was thinking about going with an LS7 clutch, cheap and should handle the power just fine.

Hey Dave. Thanks for your service. My son is there also...over by the border. Khost area. Glad you are about to get home. BTW nice looking z. The ls7 clutch will be good unless you slip the clutch a lot to help with traction(drag racing) then I would get a better disc. But mostly street use ls7 will be good. You can save some money by putting a performance type disc and just use the stock flywheel and pressure plate. I have done this successfully numerous times.

Whats going on brother. I'm somewhat in the same boat as you. I'm in Afghanistan right now and have my C5 Z at the shop getting its final tune on the blower that just got installed. I get back to the states in August and should have the car ready to play then.

the ls7 clutch hates back to back runs at the track, i did three passes and held up fine for two, on the third one it completely slipped and only reved, i let it cooled down and its fine now. but now its slips bad at high rpms, just get a monster stage 2 or a 3. im getting the 3 since its a 6 puck

I just picked up my c5 z06 after my last and FINAL deployment.. 2001 speedway white and I love the car.. it has a modest list of parts right now..
slp blackwing filter, f-13 cam, light weight crank pulley, long tubes, x pipe, corsa cat back, tune, catch can...

i couldnt even sleep the last couple of night before I picked up the car..

but, your project sounds sick.. post some numbers.

Nice looking Z you got there! Congrats on your purchase. Thats a nice setup. Like ZGLASS mentioned a well ported fast would be nice for that combo. Have you considered ls6 stage 2.5 heads over the stage 1 heads?

Yea, my budget is kinda expended for now. Its hard to pay $30k for a car and $6k in parts on a military salary; cant stay deployed forever!

I'll eventually get a ported FAST intake and retune it, but that's going to take a few more months.

Thanks for serving Brother !!

Gonna be nice Dave. I did close to the same setup and had 434 rwhp. That got me 11.3's in the quarter with the stock gear in a 2003 Zo6. Your gonna love the new power !!

Be safe !

I have the Centerforce DF 12" clutch in my C5Z and it has yet to let me down with 460whp 418wtq. The clutch drives great and has smooth engagement unlike my previous Spec units. (I WOULD NEVER RUN A SPEC PRODUCT AGAIN!!)

Thinking of going with some all black C5 Z06 replicas in stock C5 Z06 sizes for now..I'd like to get something lighter/nicer down the road though.

Most of the parts are here, just waiting for the YT's to come in and that's about it. Contemplating ordering a FAST intake, but I have to wait a couple weeks to see what the budget is looking like.

Congrats and thanks for your service! Let me know if there are any questions I can answer for you about a Monster Clutch. Looks like you have a solid set-up, just need to be able to put it to the ground

Got in touch with Pat G and going with a custom grind cam, should net me a little more (15-20rwhp according to Pat) and hopefully reach my goal. So my 228R, .600" Valve Springs and 7.4 Pushrods are on eBay!
