Default Buy a Z06 or a ZR1?

I'm shopping for one or the other, and the general vibe I am getting is that the ZR1 just isn't worth the extra money unless you plan on tracking it a lot. Just wanted to see if any current Vette owners agree or disagree with this. I'm mainly wanting it for a weekend driver, not a DD, not a track car, just something fun to cruise around in.

EDIT: To clarify, I am referring to C6 gens. Probably 2008 or 2009 if I was going to do a Z06 which I most likely will.

z06 will be cheaper , spend 4-6 grand on the z and have heads , cam , headers , and maybe fast 102 setup and be at 600 wheel or close to it .

The zr1s dont dyno all that well and get heat soak . And need some mods to help with that .

Nothing beats the sound of a 427 with big cam and heads . I know the zr1 is more power but i myself have an eye on a c6z .

Thanks for that, exactly what I figured and heads/cam/headers etc is the route I would go. And you're right, I love the sound of that 427 with a good set of cams. I think I'm fairly set on the Z06. I was really set on a Terminator Cobra but I think I want the Z06 more. I drove one last year and LOVED it.

Nice TA btw.

You wanted a Termi but then went to a Z06 or ZR1? That's quite the jump in selection.

08+ with a LS3. an A&A charger kit would be the cheapest and fastest out of them all.

Heh yeah, I've been all over the map with selection, was even considering an '08 Viper (when they went to 600hp), call it automotive ADD. This is a 3rd vehicle so I'm not set on anything specific, just fast. Plus I've always been more of a Chevy guy than a Ford guy, so as much as I'd like that loud S/C whine of a Termi, I think a Vette would be more enjoyable.

Not a bad idea. How good are LS3's with boost? It won't be a daily driver, but I do want to keep it reliable. I'll do some researching on those just in case a good deal on one comes along.

The ZR1 carbon ceramic brakes are no joke and one of the most overlooked upgrades between the base z06 and the ZR1. The price tag on them would make me shy away from street driving with them. All of the carbon fiber bits would be a nightmare if you ever had any body damage as well in a real world application.

Coolness factor, however, the ZR1 takes it IMO.

c6 base looks like **** to me , c6z or nothing . I think you will love a c6z with heads and cam . You cam probably even find one all done . If you look hard enough you can get the z with the zr1 carbon brakes option.

lol... you could get the zr1 rear 1/4s, and an A&A supercharger on a c6 base and still probably be cheaper then a z06. and not have to worry about the exhaust valve dropping.

If you decide on an LS3, consider a 2010+ Grand Sport, best looking LS3 powered C6 IMO

VERY NICE! That would be my goal over time. I want enough power to be pretty much the fastest car on the street at any given time more-or-less, but not so much that you just can't drive it.

For sure, the ZR1 would have the cool factor, just deciding if it is worth the price premium since the real world performance gains over a Z06 aren't exactly night and day. Good point on the CF stuff, hadn't thought about that.

I completely agree, and that is why I am pretty hung up on a Z06. I just see too many base ones, and generally when I do there is a 60+ yr old guy driving it. I figure the Z06 looks meaner and tends to lean toward the younger crowd (I'm 33, so young-ish crowd).

That is possible, just depends on the deals, Z06's are coming down I think, so I'll just have to see what I can find. But I think in most cases you might be right.

If you want a badass car...and you don't wanna race or mod it...then why start with something slower?

Get the ZR1...it's got everything you want, and more. Drive a stock Z06...kinda boring...drive a stock ZR1...not so boring(sorry, drove lots of vettes). Yes, you wanna BUILD or modify...then go with a lesser value car and mod the **** out of it...... better value per mod but....it still won't be a "ZR1".

The ZR1...if you WANTED to mod...would also be cheaper to mod and MAKE POWER(IE gains). Think PULLEY/TUNE and will be most power then MOST people can handle. Want more? EASY port mods to blower/Tb/etc.

The gains picked up by the ZR1...you would have to spend a decent amount of money on the Z06...and likely have a LOUDER vehicle.

The ZR1 is sick. Only way I would COMPARE it to a Z06 or CONSIDER the Z06 is if it was a CARBON Z06.....

Get the ZR1...it's the GENERAL.

I would start ZR1 and mod it to 850rw+

It's been done many times w/o nitrous. (blower only)

Another consideration is the retained value of said vette. The ZR1 I would imagine holding its value much better than a modded variant of the others.

Not to mention ZR1 are a LOT more rare, at least where I live. I've seen more C7's on the road in the past month than ZR1's in the past 5 years...
