Default Ripper shifter . . . extremely stiff.

My dad just picked up a 99 FRC 6spd. It has a B&M ripper shifter and the thing is SUPER STIFF. It's stiff just being in the neutral position and moving it left to right.

I had the Ripper in my 98 Z28. . .and it felt nice.

Is this just a typical characteristic of the C5 Ripper. Or not?

OR is this how all aftermarket C5 shifters are??

Finally (the question I was sick of hearing as an Fbody owner), what do you have or have you had, and what do you like?

Thanks!
Mike

The aftermarket shifters for Vette's seam to be alot stiffer than the F-body's. At first I thought it was too stiff but got use to it and love it now.Have never missed 3rd/4th at the track with the shifter.

I have the Ripper in my FRC and it is stiff. I changed the trans fluid which helped a little. Get used to it because that's the way it is.

I have a Ripper and yes they are stiff. Once I got used to it, I wouldn't trade it for anything. One thing that will help is the installation of a taller shift ****. I bought the phantom **** and it helps to reduce the effort and notchiness (more leverage).

I was just wondering the same thing. I cannot shift nearly as quickly as in my ripper/drill mod f body. Is there a drill mod for a vette?

Its my understanding the C5 has a different line with 3 restrictors. So a drill mod is not possible. I would try swapping the fluid and changing the shift **** as I am able to shift the Vette faster than I can an F-body equipped with the Ripper (the f-car actually felt sloppy to me).

99C5JA, why did you decide to use a reverse split cam?

interested also in the "why a reverse split cam", seems to give good power and a lot of torque : where in the curve ?

Well back in the "old days" reverse split cams were fairly popular. They were designed to make up for the deficiencies in the LS1 and LS6 intake. The cam I have was a medium sized cam at the time if you can believe it. It sounds like I'm talking 10 years ago which really shows how far the LS1 community has come. But all in all I'm very happy with the cam. It idles nice. Makes good power for its size and according to the DIC I average in the 25mpg range. The next mod this thing gets is gears. Those and some stickies should get this turd into the 11's. I've attached the dyno if you're curious.

It makes good torque peak but look at the curve. You're barley above 250rwtq at 3000 rpm. That may be the reason why you want gears. I'm not ragging on your setup. I'm just analyzing the results.

I hope not. I have been told that a reverse split is supposed to make good torque. Look at this thread. https://ls1tech.com/forums/dynamometer-results-comparisons/234646-tr-230-224-cam-only.html He runs a slightly bigger intake duration and the torque curve is much flatter. However, I have noticed that both torque curves start low and then jump up sharply.

mgreen, sorry for hijacking your thread.

Actuallly from talking to the operator at DRM, I think part of what you're commenting on at the start of the graph is just lag from when he hit the button to when he floored it. Also tq is listed on the right so at 3k its hit roughly 320lb-ft. I'll probably to do some tuning this spring for part throttle. I know its running rich in some of the lower FTC's. From what I have seen a reverse split cam does not seem to make as much peak tq, but seems to have a very broad curve. I'm hoping that if I get the part throttle tune better, the lower numbers will come up some.

You're right about the torque numbers being on the right side of the graph. My mistake. Maybe the mushroom shaped torque curve will flatten out with some more tuning. If you have the time, see if you can re-dyno the car after the tuning tweaks.
