Default rule of thumb

Is there a rule of thumb for air temp? Something like each 10 degrees drop is good for .2 seconds...

DA, yes. Just straight air temp? Not really a straight up correction factor on that one. Humidity and barometric pressure play a factor in how the car makes power as well. Not just temp.

i would also like to know about the air temp theory.... my car was running 7.9's in the 1/8 back in Febuary/March. Now that it is 20* warmer, and i went from a magnaflow muffler to a flowmaster, my car is running 8.20's.

i hope its the 20*temp difference and not the flowmaster muffler.... HELP!!!!

There are more factors than just air temp. Barometer, humidity, wet bulb and wind all play a factor. You can have 2 days both at 75 degrees, but if one has a 30% humidity and a 30.00 barometer vs. the other's 70% humidity and a 29.85 barometer your car will run slower on the second day.

DA = Density Altitude (the corrected altitude you are running at) will ultimately give you a better gauge of how much faster/slower you are running. I'm sure the car didn't just slow down 3 tenths from a muffler swap (which IMHO, go back to the Magnaflow, they work better), and chances are your incremental times may not be the same.

Yes we know there is more than one variable involved. However, the post asks for a rule of thumb; not a scientific dissertation. Let's just assume a perfect world where all other variables are constants (ceterus paribus).

It really doesn't work that way. As was stated above, the air (DA) can have huge variances at the same temperature. How rich or lean you have your tune-up will also have a major effect on your vehicle in different air.

Last time I checked, we don't live in a perfect world. And since JUST TEMPERATURE alone won't give you a rule of thumb, as I proved above, I figured maybe you didn't take the rest into account. Keep in mind everyone has a "beginning point" in racing and figuring out why cars run what they do in different air conditions, and we have plenty of what questions that may seem to some veteran racers as "givens", but I was only trying to help. Sorry for trying to help you out, but I'd rather give you ALL the information than just "go along" with the "general rule of thought."
