Default Stock 2006 Trailblazer SS... 13's Baby!!!

You guys might recall that I had dynoed my stock 2006 Trailblazer SS and it belted out a healthy 328rwhp over at Speed Inc. My TBSS is a strippo, and is 2WD.

I took her out to GLD back on 5.06.08 and ran 6 times, and managed to click off a 14.10@98.51, with a 2.14 short time.

Thread here: https://ls1tech.com/forums/drag-racing-results/916377-stock-2006-trailblazer-ss-14-10-98-51-mph.html

Okay let's pick this up again. So it was a couple of days ago when I was wondering, what would the weather be like Tuesday or Wednesday, since it's been a bit cool for this time of year. Sure enough, www.weather.com shows that the weather up by Great Lakes Dragaway would hover around 58F from 5pm to 8pm, and then drop to 48F. Dang, I have to try one more time to run a 13.9 with the truck. I like to read threads on www.TBSSOwners.com, those guys like to race a lot and are very helpful. Suggestions included taking out the spare, which is a full size spare that is about 70 lbs, a heavy bugger for sure. Some traditional advice was given as well, like airing down the rears to 25psi, and pumping up the fronts to 40. Some folks like removing the passenger side headlight too.

So I sat in a conference call, watching the clock, hoping to get out at 4:30PM to get a bit of a jump on traffic. Driving from downtown Chicago to GLD is about 68 miles, and with the Edens down to two lanes, the drive is about an hour and 45 minutes in rush hour traffic. *Sigh* I got out at 4:55PM. Bummer, traffic was bad. I quickly tech'd in, which was me just showing my helmet to the tech guy, drove over to the pits, and popped the hood open.

Okay so I had the hood open, and then decided to take off the engine cover because it does trap in hot air, and I wanted the Brick to cool off as fast as possible, the truck does not like to run right off the highway, supposedly the pcm cuts the timing way back as evidenced by my initial 14.7 passes from my last outing. I went ahead and dropped the spare, oof that wheel/tire is heavy. I aired down the rears to 25psi. FYI a "Check Tire Pressure" light will come on if the tires are that low on air. I also had about a 1/3 tank of gas.

I'm getting a little wordy so let me get to the good stuff...

First pass:

14.100@99.19, 2.20

Dang, matched my best ET from last time, picked up .5 mph, and on a worse 60 ft! I think I got in the gas too fast and spun too much.

I decided to get into the gas more slowly, which is highly counterintuitive to me. I want to mash that gas like I'm on 28x10.5 slicks and see some sky, but alas the factory 20" RSA don't like that.

I also tried to follow slicked up cars and take advantage of the rubber....

Drum roll please........

13.84@99.74, 2.111!!!!

Dang!

.119
2.111
5.855
8.921
80.92
11.5789
13.840
99.74

I was pretty shocked, truck never feels that much better on a pass, since a 13.8 doesn't feel dramatically better than a 14.1 to me... But I'll take it!

Here is a breakdown of all my runs that night:

14.10@99.19, 2.20, 7:19PM, rear tires at 25psi, !spare, spun a bit too much
13.84@99.74, 2.11, 7:51PM, rear tires at 25psi, !spare, got into gas slower
13.86@99.50, 2.14, 8:11PM, same setup as above, slight worse short time
13.95@98.93, 2.11, 8:42PM, same setup as above, dew is coming in , air is getting worse
14.08@98.78, 2.13, 9:11PM, same setup as above, air got worse

Thoughts:
I think if I had been able to get there a little earlier, I might have run a 13.7x, the air at GLD can go away pretty fast and it's bad (in my opinion) by 8:30 - 9:00PM.

I had wanted to try a run doing a short burnout, but based on what I've read about the pcm taking out timing with the temps get hot, I figured it might hurt the runs. I also wanted to try running in 3rd, to see if it would wind out the shifts a bit more.

I'm thoroughly impressed by these trucks now, I honestly did not think it would run this good, and I thought I'd just collect some 14.doh slips.

I've got a CAI, e-fans, trans cooler, a ported OEM TB, and am ready to throw a tune into it. Not sure what it will run, but I'm hoping for a 13.2 with some practice and some fall air.

What were you racing?

I've noticed that my rides would slow down over the course of the night, have noticed that for years. Once the dew sets in and it gets dark, I get slower.

Oh yeah I gotcha. Yeah I try to get to GLD as early as possible, because most of my runs after 8-9pm are slower, as much as 1-2 tenths.

I need to get the Camaro and the Formula out again, though I won't run the Formula at GLD since I don't have my NHRA license yet so I'll probably run that at Byron. Camaro got a new converter and intake manifold so I'm hoping for some 10.6-10.7's on motor.

Camaro and I are legal to 10.00, so GLD will work.

Formula is cert'd to 8.50 but I can only go 10.00 if they get strict.

Congrats John!! I'm hoping to get the TBSS back out to the track after the tune and e-fans. My times at cordova were lacking from a few weeks ago. but I had no miles on the tune.

Not sure what you mean?

Hey Snoop, good meeting you guys, your car is real nice and you've got a ton of potential there.

Hey Paul thanks, I have to talk to you about the e-fans and stuff since you already did them.
