Default Questions on cutting radiator supports out

Did you fab anything up to support the bottom of the bumper cover?? just wondering if it is too flexible without the plastic that ties it into the fender wells.

When using the stock radiator does everyone keep it in the stock location and angle??

Any pics of cut front ends would be appreciated.

We cut the bottom of the core support off, welded on a tubular steel section, and then the radiator sat straight up and down.

For the bumper, we have (4) stainless tubular mounts that tie the cover back to the frame and core support.

would you think that with the top and bottom cut there will be enough support from a k member and a front bumper support like one burkhart sells?

I used Chuck's piece. No issues at all. Plan on boxing in the openings over the winter.

The one LS1SSII put on my car also acts as an "SYA" bar, meaning that that is the first thing to hit after a big wheelie, not my Lemmons hedders or oil pan.

So if you plan ahead, you can have it save your exhaust and also give a good place to jack the car up.

I run a BBC, so to keep the weight and bulk down, we just install the engine separate from the trans.

Badboo, havw you used that is a SYA crash car. I thought one of the main point was to have them so one side was fixed mounted, and the other is loose to break the hose clamp off. So they bend, to abosrbe some of the force?

The top of the radiator now sits about flush with the top of the factory core support.

I first ran my front straps for my engine diaper on it (looped around the cross bar, as you would with wrap-around 5-point harnesses), they ripped clear off.

I also have come back from runs with rubber and asphalt hanging from the bottom of the support.

I guess it is not an SYA bar like the ones available for sale, rather it is purpose built to take the brunt of an impact if the car slams down violently. It is not a consumable item.

However, it works really well and I have not damaged anything beyond the straps on the engine diaper.

We put the rad in a bumper support and then cut out the upper and lower all the time. We move the rad up about a foot from the stock location and gain a ton of space. The bumper support also adds a lot more structure than the core supports anyway.
