DOT approved Helmets?
In MD cars that run under 13.9, the driver needs to be wearing a DOT approved helmet. Anyone know of any sites to get one, or any places around MD to pick on up? I want to get it Powder coated with SOM paint, & maybe some flames or skulls, etc..

I agree, make sure you check if it has to be DOT and/or SNELL approved....
I would recommend going to a motorcycle shop and trying on helmets if your going to order one online - so you find the right size. My giant head needed a XXXL helmet.

www.newenough.com they usually have some good deals. I think that is where I got my RKT101 Carbon Fiber helmet.

i recommend snell m2005 which is both DOT and SNELL approved so you ll be covered down the road if you decide to go faster.
HJC usually has 80-95 dollar base range that is both approved. for the money is the way to go esp if your going to spray it SOM.

as stated above go to a local shop and try a few on....each brand is going to be completely different fit and feel /pressure spots....order online and safe yourself the mark up

I think I might have to get one of those. I like the look and it's about in the price range I was looking to spend. Says it meets or exceeds SNELL M2005 & DOT which from what I gather would be NHRA legal, although the track I usually go to is not, but this way I'm covered if I visit one that follows those rules. Figure since my car is getting faster little by little it's time to get a helmet, plus I'm looking to buy an ATV so if I do get one it'll be nice to have for both.

NHRA ules state the helmet is covered for 12 years from the date. Thus a Snell M or SA2000 would expire Jan 1st of 2012.
If you are planning for single digits eventually, get a full face helmet. I wear one and it helps me to concentrate on the tree and blocks a tad bit more noise in my opinion.

hopefully everybody who owns a DOT helmet is aware that no actual testing of the helmet is required to be DOT certified. If you want to protect your *** you had better get either a SNELL or ANSI (American National Standards Institute) certified helmet. These certifications actually require real-world testing first. Just FYI for everyone

So what is the major differences between say a Snell M2005 and a Snell SA2005? I know they would both be good till 2017 and that one is motorcycles and the other cars, but they would both be legal under NHRA rules correct?

I'm giving a general overview on this as I don't have my NHRA rulebook in front of me.
Both the M2005 and SA2005 would be good until Jan 2017, but some classes require the higher safety rated SA versus the M (a dragster would be one example where a SA helmet would be required, whereas I'm pretty sure an M helmet will work in a door car down to 8.50 in the 1/4 mile).

Thanks for the info, I won't ever be fast enough that I would require an SA then. I will probably stop by the local motorcycle shop and try some on and order a M2005 so that I'll be good for quite a few years.
