however much you narrow it per side, subtract that amount from the backspacing. For example the stock width with 15x10 wheel uses 7.5" back spacing. My 12 bolt is narrowed 2" per side, so now i run 15x10" wheels with 5.5" back spacing.

The above statement is somewhat correct ...do you want to tuck the tire it have it flush with the quarter panel ???
I narrowed my 9" 4 - 5/8 a side and run a 15X10 with a 4" backspace ...car is mini tubbed and i tuck a 325 dr or 28 x 10.5W ...heres a couple of pics ..

wildside where are you located ...I made a simple little jig up to set my axle length ...I took 2 old 12 bolt axles ..stock stuff from my chevelle ..cut em down and slid a piece of tubing over them ...bolted my wheels to them and bumped em out the the quarters clamped the axles to the tube with hose clamps and measured flange to flange ..i can get u a pic of the deal later ...headed to the track in a few ...but it removed all doubt ..just told my chassis guy I need X amount flange to flange ...

Here's my 12 bolt with 2" off per side, 15x10 RT-S's with 5.5" BS and 295/55/15 MT DR's. The car is on jackstands so the wheels/tires dont tuck all that great at the moment, however, i can jack up the rear and get some more pics if you'd like
PS- the car still has stock untouched wheel wells.

3"s you would want a 4.5BS to maintain the wheel in the stock location.
