Default How much better should my 60ft be? 6spd

Car is a 98 SS camaro, 430rwhp through the 10 bolt, car now has a S60 with 4.30 gears. All suspension parts except drag bar. Shocks are koni DA's on all 4 corners. 26 et drag stiffwalls. Weight with me in it is around 4000lbs. Front sway bar was on it and still connected.

This week was my first time running with drag tires and skinnys, so I took it alittle easy at first. Set the 2-step at 4000 for the first three passes and went 1.75-1.77 60 ft. Car bogged pretty bad. Tires were at 16psi.

Then I upped the 2-step to 5000. First pass spun hard, but 1.67 short time. So I loosened compression on rear shocks two clicks and added 1/4 turn of rebound because it was hopping slightly. Next 4-5 passes still spinning some, but was cutting .65 short times, then the final pass it went 1.63.

I never readjusted the 2-step higher because I felt it would just spin harder and hurt the 60ft. Weight transfer seemed ok, but doesn't pick the front tires up, left straight, no squat on either side( I have airbags in the rear springs to help with that). So the question is how much more is left in it and how do I get it. Thanks

Ryan

Alittle off topic,,,but do you mind telling me what your trap MPH was in the 1/8 and the 1/4 and what RPM you were crossing the 1/4 at.

Reason I ask is because I am thinking about going with a 4.30 gear and I use 26" tires also.

Thanks

Not at all. 1/8 mph was between 90-94 mph. Really seemed to be dependent on how high I shifted into 2nd and how cleanly it went into third. My trans needs a rebuild, and my shiftlight is set to 6200 for the 1-2 shift, but if I just nicked the rev limiter(6600) it would mph better. Through the 1/4 115.90 was my highest, that was just turning on the shiftlight at 6400 at the stripe. I think the 4.30 and 26 tire is good for about 119 @6600, not sure where your limiter is set.

A 4.30 gear is good to 112 with a 26" tall tire at 6200 in an '98-'02 M6 F-body ... low 12's in the 1/4.

I would think a 28 inch tire and the two step set at least 6k and it will 60ft better. But for sure up the 2 step and hope you got a good clutch.

Got a monster stage 3 in it. I'm gonna work with the 26" tires for now. Up them to 27" if I need to, but is at a perfect rpm going through the traps right now. Just gotta figure how to make it hook a little better. Hoping low 1.50's are possible at that weight and power.

I have done 1.48 60' with an M6 and a 28" ET Street non stiff wall. But that was with 3.70 gears and about 670rwhp.

Your weight is not helping, is the car bogging any or what is it doing. get a camcorder to record the rear end when launching and that will help you make adjustments, also if you can data log the computer it will help you see what the rpms drop to and so forth to know how its hooking and if its bogging. Send me a pm if that monster ever goes south. I have heard scaling the car and getting the weight setup right at all corners helps out but i have no experience with it. I plan on doing that with my car and see what happens. Are you dropping the clutch or slipping it? Seems like your dropping it to me. I drop mine and do not slip it, i let the tires do all the work.

Yes, dropping the clutch. I have pics of it, but the guardrail was in the way of the rear tire. It was spinning, not terrible, but there was no point in launching higher. From what I could get out of the pictures, it looks like it was hitting the tire too hard then spinning. I'm going to move the lca brackets up one hole to see if it helps. Also will pull the endlinks off the front this time. Hope that will help alittle. And ill definitely video this time out. Thanks

Mine went from spinning off the 2-step @ 5000 - (high 1.6's) to dead hooking - yanking the fronts off the 2-step @ 6000 (mid 1.5's) just from moving the torque arm down to the bottom hole and moving the rear control arms to the 2nd hole (from the top).

More rpm and some fine tuning on the shocks - and I think some high 1.4's won't be unreasonable. I might need to move the control arms back to the stock hole to take even more hit out of the tires.

It'll take time to find the combination that works for your car - m6 cars take some work to make them hook. Every driver is different, and every clutch hits different. Just work at it and you'll find it. Once you do - it'll be hard to wipe the smile off your face.

What torque arm do you have? I have a bmr adjustable long style with their relocation bracket. Right now I have it adjusted about in the stock location. I don't really know if I should move it down or not. Still 4 more hole I can move it down. What do you think? 1.4's with a car this heavy would be ridiculous. hopefully 1.5's.

I have a MWC short torque arm. Call BMR and ask them where to start with their bar.

My car is pretty close to full weight

The good thing about a camcorder is you have a bunch of pics, my sony handycam records at 30 frames per second. So i have 30 different pictures every second i can look at to see what is going on. I can forward and reverse it and review it till i am happy. Works great for me.

I went 1.68 with 4.10s 27" qtps, with the 2step at 4500. I trapped 94 in the 1/8 and 119.88 in the 4th. You know the rest.

Thanks Nmass. My wife has a cannon that records as well as takes pics. So next time ill have her do that. I think I have a good idea of what changes to make. Whether it works or not is a different story.
AC- very similar to my 60ft and mph in the 1/8th. You got me by a couple mph up top though.

New PB today: 11.63 @ 118 with a 1.540 60ft. I replaced my old boxed LCA's with tubular ones from UMI because I couldn't get the boxed ones in the right hole on the LCA brackets. Moved them up to the middle hole, from the bottom one. Bogged at 5000 on the 2 step. Upped it to 5500 and went 1.58. Then at 6000, I dead hooked the 1.54, had a 1.53 spun a little, and a 1.57.

This is with 1le springs, koni DA's, 16psi in the et drags, stock sway bars connected front and back, @ around 4000lb raceweight. I'm happy as hell with that. I think it has a little more in it, maybe a high 1.4 if I get the shocks right.

What effect would unhooking the front sway bar have?

you want the tires to spin a little bit, it will net the best times... Consider a "dead hook" a problem, launch higher. You want wheel speed up, so you stay in your power band and dont bog. If the suspension is set up right, you should be able to leave at ~6200-6500 spin about 10-15 ft, and the car should go faster. Just keep at it, maybe go to a track rental...

Yeah, I know what you are saying. But on the runs that it spun, it actually went sideways a little before it bogged. What I really need to do is get video of it. My wife couldn't go this week so I went alone. Hopefully next time.

I cant see how getting tire spin for 10-15 ft(25% of your 60 ft) & hardly moving is really gonna be beneficial to a best 60 time. Any time I got that much wheel spin my 60 time was much worse. I understand you dont want to launch at too low RPMs as it will bog & drop the rpms well below the powerband when the tires do hook. My experience is with a high enough rpm launch & a dead hook nets a better 60 because the engine is still in the powerband vs any slip at all. Looks like the OP is getting it figured it out as his 60s are getting where they should.
