Best Race Header??
Ok there is a ton of headers out there but who makes the best fitting and performing RACE STYLE header? Not a street application. All out drag only.
Some brands are a pain in the *** getting at the plugs and makes me wonder wtf they are thinking when they design these?
Its for a 98-02 F-Body 1 7/8 are what I'm looking for

never tried 2inch. But saw a gain going 1 7/8th over 1 3/4 passeters
If I saw a set of Big 2 or something used I wouldn't be worried about getting them. I've seen some guys getting stepped headerd and think there coast a little more, 1K +. But I got the normal 1 7/8th ARH and really happy with them. I know Newera useing them on stock and bolt on cars, there no loss in power. I know some locals that I talked into getting 1 7/8th AHR on there cars SI and they make more power then a 13/4 car.
I got mine there a few years ago for like $799

I know the ARH you can order the headers with the Ypipe and ask for a 3.5 or 4inch outlet on the Ypipe. Thats what I did to fit to my 4inch Ipipe. Most places just stock them without knwoing this. And they will have a smaller outlet on the Ypipe to fit the stock catback. I think its like 2 3/4.

If it's a max effort cam only car I don't think there should be anything at all past the collector other then maybe a turndown.... no need. Dead weight, it's cartainly not making more power with anything more then the headers themselves......
IF, you are going to drive it then the 4 inch is a must on the collector.. and nothing more then a short little race muffler should be off that I wouldn't think. Certainly no reason to go all the way out the back, again unless you're going to drive it and will have legal issues because of it.

JL, why would the 4" be a must on the collector if he's going to drive it? Just by guessing I would think the 4" would hurt lower end power compared to something smaller.
I'm just curious. No real experience here so any info would be appreciated.

I believe JL is saying if the car is max effort and you are still going to drive it on the street and pass inspections then the best thing to do would be have a 4" outlet on the y-pipe. I would hardly ever drive the car on the street, maybe a cruise in twice a year or something but other than that it will be a track only car. The plan is to go as fast as possible on cam only, then go to a h/c/i setup and see what that will do, then spray it. This is over the next three to four years, right now I'm trying to figure out everything I need to have the car ready for this coming spring.
Studderin what cam is currently in your car now? I remember reading in "bitch in on a diet" that you changed it, but couldn't remember what you had changed it to.

Dyno it thru the exhaust like you did with the last one and if you can, drop the exhaust off the back of the headers (I assume you have it in open loop so the O2's aren't doing anything at all) and please post the changes... if you have to add some fuel, do it and let us know % wise what you had to add.
I already know there's going to be a gain I just want someone to do the rear world test and show it on here... as it's something that I think has been talked about but the documentation is limited.

You'd be surprised what we came up with on the Smurf car.

But, I can list off several examples of cars that I have worked on where x pipes, h pipes, merge collectors, and open headers were tested on, some even in the same day (dropping the H out and capping it, vs taking it all off, vs a muffeled system, etc)
The results always pointed to the car making more power with nothing at all, or a short extension/turndown off the collector. We had runs recorded, with weather data and compared all of them, and even with the weather conditions/water grains getting worse still saw the car run better with nothing then it did with a couple variations of exhaust systems.
Every car is different, alot of the technology with merge collectors and the like have changed things, how much I can not 100% say as I haven't done a test with several different collectors on the same car on the same day (not sure how many people have done that one, I'm sure the list isn't that long) and there's surly a gain to be had there.. but it's not going to be night and day.
In the end I don't think any of it was night and day. Dropping a 3 inch Y pipe with a 3 inch I pipe off one of these cars to open headers is a pretty big improvement. Taking a 3.5 inch Y off with a merge collector and a 4 inch I pipe, isn't going to make anywhere near the same difference.
