Default Improved racing oil pan baffle worth it?

I'm about to do a k member swap and I've been looking at the improved racing oil pan baffle. I honestly don't know if I'm having oil problems on hard launches since I'm watching the road but I'm cutting low 1.5s and after reading about oil pressure dropping I figure its a good idea if it works. What do you guys think? I've tried searching but couldn't really come up with anything. Buy one or not?

I'd say it works. I have one in mine, but like you I'm not watching the oil pressure gauge when I launch. I don't think it's the be all end all solution to oil pressure problems some have, but it definitely won't hurt. If you have the cash, I say get it.

Saw this pot and thought I'd add some objective data to show the effectiveness of our baffling.

Here are a couple of oil pressure charts we've been meaning to post up on the website. This is in a road racing application, but the same principles apply.

The charts below show oil pressures versus G-forces for one lap on a road course. Both are the same vehicle with the same setup on the same track, the only difference is the addition of the Improved Racing baffle in the second chart.

Factory oil pan and baffling:

With Improved Racing oil pan baffle:

Here is another test performed on a rock crawler that gives you can idea of just how effective the baffling is. The front of the truck was raised slowly until oil pressures started to drop with both the factory oil pan and with the Improved Racing baffle.

Note this was a completely static test - that means the truck just sat there at that angle for several minutes, running at idle. The baffles are really designed to more effective in a dynamic situation - meaning the vehicle is moving and oil is sloshing around in the pan, and as it flows the baffle traps the oil around the pick up tube. Under heavy acceleration like in drag racing, the baffling traps the oil behind the pickup as it's forced toward the rear of the pan. Then under braking after the 1/4 mile mark, the baffle will funnel the oil flowing from the rear of the pan toward the pickup once again. What that basically means is that higher angles can be achieved for short periods of time (several seconds) before pressures begin to drop.

Maximum static angle of 37-degrees with factory oil pan and baffle:

Maximum static angle of 42-degrees with Improved Racing oil pan baffle:

I run one. 45 passes this year, most 1.2 60's and a few up in the air a bit. No oil pressure problems.

Go figure I just had my pan off and meant to look into this but got busy and forgot. Guess I will go ahead and order one and pull the pan back down and install it.

Just saw this thread but any of you know if the baffle plus the ls1 oil pan will still fit without clearance problems on a lq4...I'm doing and engine swap on my Fbody plus will it have any effect if the car is turboed...like oil restriction to the turbo? Thanks

Yes, it will fit with the LQ4 no problem, and there are no problems with turbo cars.

I also recommend picking up our F-Body crank scraper along with the baffle for even better oil control: http://www.improvedracing.com/crank-...ody-p-431.html

Cool, does this work with the stock windage tray or does it replace it...if I'm correct lq4 do have a stock 3.622 stroke right I remember seeing 3.662 for some reason

Yes, it works with the windage tray. You put the crank scraper on first, then the windage tray and bolt it down. Don't forget if you're using the F-Body pan you also need the F-Body windage tray (we sell those too if you need one).

And yup, they have a 3.622" stroke so it will fit.

Looks like a nice product.

I have used stock parts with over 370 +/- wheels up launches since early 2008 with several 60 foot times from high 1.20's to mid 1.40's. Including the 280 foot wheel stand in the video in the sig.
