7.0 1/8 LS1 84 Monte Carlo
I'm trying to build a 84 Monte Carlo that will run in the high 6 to 7.0 class. I have a bone stock ls1 pulled from a 99 Camaro that I could use for the build. I want the car to be somewhat streetable and preferable able to reach my goal running all motor. I will have nitrous on the car but only for grudge races. I'm looking for suggestions on a setup for the car. heads, cams, carb, intake, stay fuel injected or anything you think maybe necessary.

I think I'd start out simplifying things and go with a single plane and good carburetor. Pick up an ignition box to run the coils when you're putting a LS engine in an older car. Contact someone on the heads like BTR, AI, TSP, ... and have them build a nice head and match a cam to it. Those cars are fairly light and hook well with the coil spring suspension so you shouldn't have a weight or traction issue. 12-bolt with a good gear, TH350 with an 8" converter, rebuild the bottom end of your LS if necessary but leave the stock crank, rods, and pistons (assuming that they are good), and put a nice set of headers on it and you should be there. That will be a nice combination! I've always liked those cars.

Tar Heel thanks for the response. You think my goal is obtainable using a victor jr intake and a quickfuel 750 carb? Also wondering about nitrous. I reading thru several postings and trying to decide between a fogger or plate system.

corporate 8.5 10 bolt out of a g body GN , turbo T type Buick , or 442 which would be 373 ratio posi would be a cheaper , bolt right in and arguably similar strength to the 8.75 12 bolt rear end , but then again look at the times some automatic f bodies have run on the same 7.5 inch ring gear you already have also and it has less parasitic loss.
Also you can build the 200r the car came with to take a lot of abuse for not a lot of $$$ its the same trans the GN got and those guys have the parts figured out and have been produced long enough in big enough numbers to be cost effective.
These ^ items and your good intake and carb your already thinking about on spray should hit your goal provided tires/suspension are up to hooking it

I have a power glide trans I thought about using or maybe trading the 4l60 I got with the motor for a th350 or th400. The guy I got the car from said he was told the rear was from a ss monte carlo and has 373 gears. I haven't checked it but will before I make any changes to the rear. Anybody got a good head cam combo they would recommend?

Regarding the transmission I would stay away from the 4L60E simply because I'm not sure how you would wire one into an older car. The TH350 would be fine especially if you put a 2.75 low gear in it as well as a loose 8" converter.

It's not a daily driver, just a weekend toy. The track does require the car to be able to make a 15 mile round trip but I don't think that will be a problem. Is there a big gain in running a carb setup over fuel injected? I know the required parts change because i have a 65 impala running fuel injected now.

Read to buy parts
Well I finally made time to complete my swap and the car is running with a stock ls1 from a 98 camaro. But I think I may have brought an engine with a burned valve. I did use the ls1 intake so the car in fuel injected. I'm using a th350 trans and researching on what rear differential to run and maybe a 373 gear. The local builders around here aren't much help. They live and dye by the sbc. Next I guess will be the head cam swap.

Do you have a budget to work with as far as the motor parts go ?

Great budget to start with on the motor!! As speedtrigger mentioned weigh the car. It'll help knowing what you weigh in the car.
As for mods I'll definitely start with a good set of headers and a nice PROVEN camshaft. Buy it as a kit and save a few bucks.....
Then I'll look in the classifieds here for a decent pair of heads. Go aftermarket if the budget allows. I just say some afr 205 heads go for 1500 and a another bought some tfs heads for 1100 bucks. 243 head combos really seem to be a hit or miss type of scenario..
Valvetrain look into a trunion kit from BTR. Heard great things about it.
Don't waste your money on LS7 lifters either.... When I see LS motors fail most of the time its a valvetrain issue...

Well I sold my LT1 camaro to build this car and I hope it pays off soon cause I miss the fun of that t56 right now. You have any cam suggestions I can read about. I'm starting a parts list today. 243 heads were in my feature but now I know I need to research a little more.

Well trying to breathe a lil life back into an older post. I've completed the ls swap and car runs decent but I see a posi rear is definitely in my near feature. Oh and I decided to go fuel injected because my son said it would be “KOOL”. I’m now researching a few cams like the ms3, ms4, a local guy is selling a comp cam 54-456-11 and another guy also has a Lunati 00012. Any suggestion or comments on my choices. And has anyone tried driving a 4:10 or 4:11 geared automatic car around. This car will be driving very little and just wondering how bad it would be.

What transmission you plan on running and how tall of a tire ?
#17
Running a TH350 trans this year with dreams of a t56 but that probably won't happen anytime soon. I have a 255/60R15 tire. But will need to be replaced soon so that may change if I find something that may be better.
