Default Doing a burnout in 2nd gear?

Car: Nitrous LS Foxbody, TH400, Runs 8s

So last year I hurt my trans a couple of times. Each time it was the sprag that rolled. This was from doing a 1-2 shift in the puddle. I have always had a hard time doing a burnout even in first gear on the street especially asphalt.

So I went to just doing burnouts in 1st and have not hurt the trans since but my trans builder is advising me to completely skip 1st gear and just do 2nd gear to keep the trans from fee spinning on decel out of the box, causing stress on the sprag.

Adding timing in the burnout box helped a lot, went from 14* to 24* total timing, but still struggled sometimes.

I wanted to know what tips could you guys give me on doing a burnout in 2nd gear?

I run a TH350.I always start my burnout in 2nd and shift to 3rd.Several hundred runs and still going strong. I always heard 1st to 2nd burnouts are trouble. You also don't want to rollout and have the tires "catch"

I haven't had issue doing burn outs with mine. Put it in 2nd and roll through water box, stab gas and grab the brake pedal, shift to 3rd. After I'm happy, just roll out.

Same here w/my old Rossler 350...but that was with a 5.57 rear gear.
OP what is your rear gear.
In my current 4L60 (3.52) is do 1st - 2nd and roll it all the way to the line. No issues so far, fingers crossed...

Trans is a 34 element steel drum. RMVB, hipster brake i think. 3.55 gears.

the track is no problem but on the street its hard to do a burnout maybe ill try laying a lot of prep down in a puddle and hope it gets the tires spinning

You can start in 2nd gear but you don't want to come out of the burnout in 2nd, really needs to be shifted into high gear or your going to beat the sprag out of it again.
Do you have a linelock? Usually setting the linelock and smacking the throttle HARD will flash the converter and get the tires going if their wet. Works way better than just rolling into it

2nd gear burnouts here......a couple times after a 4.10 swap/28s I didnt feel like the wheel speed was fast enough. I like it better with 3.73/26s.

2nd gear with 3.73

Start in second and when it jumps up on the tire go to third. Never do a burnout in first with a 400. It will break the sprag. Doesn't matter how good of a sprag you have in it either.

I've always started in 1st, get the tires spinning, bang 2nd get the wheel speed up, hit 3rd and roll out (total time 3-5 seconds max)

Full manual th350

Guess I'll start doing just the 2-3 shift...better safe than sorry

I'll have to try it next time out. I'm just a little afraid I will embarrass myself (with bigish cam) that it will just go bluaaaah. What gear do you have? Mine is a 3.54.

Like i said in my other response, Ive had 3.23 (stock) 3.73, 4.10 and 26 and 28 rears tires. When you start getting to 4.10s and 28s 2nd gear just isnt enough wheel speed IMO. I was thinking this, and later had some guys tell me hey man your slicks werent smoking much, which confirmed what I suspected. The above videos are 3.73/26s and it has no problem getting them hot. If i could go back to the 4.10/28 combo I would shift to 3rd. Didnt have it long so.....I do roll the tires slightly in 1st in the water box, starting a 2nd gear burnout is easier then you think, just get the tires wet, roll up a tad, move selector to 2nd, and go all in and stab the gas. Remember to back off the throttle cause the limiter comes quick.
