Why am I losing trap speed with each run?

![Default](https://ls1tech.com/forums/images/icons/icon1.gif)
I don't get it. I've been to the drag strip 3 times with my new Z and all 3 times my first run was the fastest of the night. Then I lose anywhere from 1.2 to 2 mph in trap speed.
Example, last Friday's runs:
Run1:
1.965 short
8.278 @ 87.15 mph
12.815 @ 108.80 mph
Density Altitude: 1910 ft
Run2:
2.006 short
8.432 @ 86.25 mph
13.012 @ 107.67 mph
Density Altitude: 1849 ft
Run3:
1.981 short
8.400 @ 86.31 mph
12.975 @ 107.71 mph
Density Altitude: 1700 ft
This wouldn't bother me so much if I didn't know that these cars are supposed to go faster with each run. Any suggestions?

Derrick,
I was thinking about your question and I came up with maybe you are shifting afew hundred rpm's differently on your runs down the 1/4 mile.
Look at your shortimes, 60ft time and the 1/8 mile. They are not the same. 60ft's and your 330fts are very important to being very consistant at the Drag Strip. I do see that you ran close to the same mph but when you are shifting down the track you have to be at the same rpm's all the time. My Et's very a little(this weekend 7.28 to 7.32 in the 1/8 mile) but most of the time I run pretty close to the same mph.(94to 95 in the 1/8 mile) <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />
I may be able to help you more if I knew your 330's on the runs, what time were they run at and what kind of tires are you running? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Cool]" src="gr_images/icons/cool.gif" />
Nice times by the way. <img border="0" alt="[cheers]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_cheers.gif" />
Seat time is the one of the most important factors to be good at the Drag Strip. <img border="0" alt="[hail]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_hail.gif" />

Coach, the SOTP feel definitely went down a little on the last two runs. But, here's my whole time slips:
Run1:
1.965 short
5.445
8.278 @ 87.15 mph
10.737
12.815 @ 108.80 mph
Density Altitude: 1910 ft
Run2:
2.006 short
5.556
8.432 @ 86.25 mph
10.913
13.012 @ 107.67 mph
Density Altitude: 1849 ft
Run3:
1.981 short
5.527
8.400 @ 86.31 mph
10.877
12.975 @ 107.71 mph
Density Altitude: 1700 ft
I'm not concerned about my ET, what bothers me is the trap speed decreasing so much on an A4 car. And until I get LS1 edit, I can't really control the shift points.

Well here in the wonderful land of New Mexico it gets up over 100 in the shade and around 150 track temperatures, plus the altitude is 4400 ft. That makes your car slow and heat soak easy. I can start out at 14.2 and 103 mph and three runs later and be up to 14.7 and 98 mph. It happens to all the cars just more so, they lose over a second. You gotta love seeing an lt1 thats running 17 second quarter miles do to the heat and high altitude. Anyway drive out this and you will have a fast 14 second ls1 with heat soak.
Anyway your times and speeds arent really showing much variation considering your 60ft times are all over the place.

Sorry to leave you hanging. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" />
I agree with Gary. Your 60fts and 330's are all over the place. I think that it is a tire issue(waht tires are you running?) or I hate to say it but, it maybe driver procedure. <img border="0" alt="[Burnout]" title="" src="graemlins/burnout.gif" />
No fame here, just asking. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />
Seat time is one of the most important things to getting your Hot Rod to run consistent times. <img border="0" alt="[hail]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_hail.gif" />
Take your Hot Rod back to the track and try it again. Please post the results. <img border="0" alt="[angel]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_angel.gif" />

My car will lose .5 second and 3-4 mph with hot lapping so it kinda depends on were you live and how hot it is.

All over the place?!? Are you serious? I mean, is 1.96, 1.98, and 2.0 that big of a difference?
Maybe it does have something to do with my tires then, because my other two trips to the drag strip went the same way. My first run would be the fastest, then my other runs would drop off considerably.
I'm using 15 inch BFG DRs. They are worn down a lot but they're still good. I hook every time. It's just that the first run my car leaves and pulls hard, then the next runs it doesn't leave or pull as hard.

Every single time I've been to the track, my best run MPH wise has been my first. It all goes downhill from there.
I wouldnt worry about it.

Just to give you a reference my 60ft times are the same too within three decimal places unless I do something different. This is without line lock and leaving off idle. I burn out the exact same way, stage the same etc. If I am trying something different each run then yes 60 ft will vary quite a bit. If your brackets racing its consistency, if your looking for better runs then sure you will have more variation.

PewterZ28,
"Yes" the 60fts do matter. Look how effected your 330's and 1/8 mile times. You need to get a better set of tire, if you want consistent times.
Hell, today I just got some Hoosiers to replace my Goodyear slicks. I had 93 runs on them since the end of May and I have been rained out two of those weekends. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="gr_tounge.gif" />
Seat time my Drag Racing friend. Get to the track. <img border="0" alt="[Burnout]" title="" src="graemlins/burnout.gif" />
Later,
Coach
PS. Don't think to much, just go to track and race. <img border="0" alt="[angel]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_angel.gif" />

I hear ya, I'll try not to think so much. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> But when I saw 108.80 on my first run, I thought...109 should be doable tonight. Then I see 107 and I think WTF? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />
I guess my '99 spoiled me. From the first run to the last run, that car would pick up 1 to 1.5 mph almost every time! <img border="0" alt="[Burnout]" title="" src="graemlins/burnout.gif" />
I'll keep ya all updated as the PewterZ gets faster. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

Derrick, it's Julio. Have you run it at MAR yet? If not, then it is really not you, it is just Gateway. Same thing has been happening to me all year. When I ran my 12.6 @ 109 (It was my second pass of a five pass night) I short timed a 1.8xx, then later I could not do any better 1.92, with a 12.7xx, but was hitting 110? That track get's slick after the sun goes down, the only thing that I can thick of causing this is this damn humidity and dew point. That and they always spray the water box, and you can't drive around them. Because of that, I have seen some people that don't even spin their tires to attempt to get the water and crap off of their tires.

Derrick,
Sweet colored Hot Rod! <img border="0" alt="[hail]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_hail.gif" />
Maybe you should go to the track when they our Bracket Racing.(TNT, just sucks!) Better track prep. Plus big tired Hot Rods are very good to run behind. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Cool]" src="gr_images/icons/cool.gif" />
Good luck. <img border="0" alt="[angel]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_angel.gif" />

Julio, the track prep hasn't been an issue for me yet...I'm not making enough power yet! My car leaves without spinning every time. Also, you can check the Density Altitudes I posted. That will show you that humidity, dewpoint, etc. were actually getting better as the night went on, not worse.
Coach, your car made me jealous until I got mine. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" /> My '99 was also a PewterZ. I just had to stay with that color when I went with an 2002 A4. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />
