Cool Skinnies, what tire do you recommend?

Bogart’s 15x4 arrival tomorrow.
I am looking for front track/street tire. I will install and drive 80 mile to the track, race then drive home and reinstall my normal street tires. I am thinking of something in the 25 to 26 inch (165r). What size and brand tire are you running or recommend.
Thanks

Are most of you running a street tire like a radial 165r from Goodyear, Petboys or Cooper.
What is the pro's and con's of running a street tire vs. MT front runner on the street and track?
I am looking for something that works good for both street and track.
What do you recommend?

What tires will you be using for the rear? If you have bias ply rears (slicks or DOT slicks) having the bias ply fronts aswell should make it feel more stable on the big end. If you just have regular drag radials on the rear then a set of el cheapo skinny VW radials will work just fine.

Don't try running a frontrunner drag race tire on the street, i.e. the 80 miles to and from the track. They are bad news on the street, especially if you run into a little shower, etc. Most guys that drive to and from track will run a 26 or 27" front radial skinny on a 3.5 or 4" lightweight alum. rim. If you're trailering to & from track, then go w/drag skinnies. (My Opinion, only.) Best wishes. WJ.

Jay from Speed Inc. runs the M/T front runner with no tread pattern to and from the track, and i've seen him do it on the street too. the track is about 80 miles from us, and i'll do the same if i drive there. just drive a bit more conservatively. try it once, and go from there.

later,
Dave

Thanks for the info
EvilLS1, You make a good point about what tire will be on the rear!
I am setting up a set of track wheels and tires that I would like to install than drive 80 miles to the track race then drive home. I have Bogarts coming 15x4, 15x9.75.
I have not decided on the rear tire yet. I would like something that I can drive to the track race and drive home if posible but, more important, a 26inch tire that will hook a 450hp 6,000 clutch dump.
I am thinking of MT Street Radial275/50/15, ET street 26/11.5.15 M&H cheater slick or if no DOT will hook than MT Drag 26/10/15.

I have a set of the MT drag radials and love 'em. They hook just as good as my old ET streets (maybe better). Up front I have 165 VW radials on 15X3.5" draglites and drive on them daily with no problems.

I just run Pepboy 165R15 Maypop tires on my street car and they've been good for a few years now. If it were something that I drove on a daily basis I would get the MT Sportsman tires. Just remember that the VW Bug tires were not really made for a 3400lb car.

EvilLS1, Thanks for the info
Looks like I will get some 165r VW tires for the front.

I have heard great things about the MT DR on Auto cars but, have not heard of anyone running them on a M6 dumping at 6,000 rpm. I am hoping to hook 1.5's to low 1.6's. Also the DR's are like 8lbs heavier than the Drags or ET Streets but it hasn't seamed to make a difference in et or mph.

I run the 8 ply MT Sportsman Pro upfront. I have driver to and from the track 3 times (225 miles one way) with them and MT DR's on the rear. Believe or not they are pretty nice to drive on.

Kyle, my VW tires are two years old, and are getting a lil thin on the tread area. I'll be replacing them in January. It'll be nice to get them back on the car, but I have some more grinding to do after I put new pads on Lost my clearance when I did that. I wish someone would make an affordable set of drag rims front and rear for our LS1 cars. I'd buy em.

My skinnies go on tomorrow along with new pads front and rear, still have to grind but not much with a spacer.

I have some 165R15's made by Kelly Tire going on.

450hp & 6000rpm drop, Doesn't really matter what the front tire's are they won't be on the ground. Don't forget to bring a jack so I can try them out ;D
