Default Powerglide with my set up?

Hi guys, I don't think my stock tranny will last the season so I need a back up plan. I want to do the tranny only once and I need something that will give me some room to grow in the future (4l60 is out, TH350 is out, TH400...maybe). I'm thinking of a Powerglide. How would that work with my set up for this season? Basicly a sub 3,000lbs race weight at 650rwhp, probrably throw in a 9" with 3.73s at the same time as the tranny. How would the car like the glide and how would it act on the street?

FWIW: Once I finally pop the stock bottom end I have something pretty crazy in mind.

Thanks,
Andrew

Just plan on not going much faster than 50 on the street (no OD)

or you could buy a gear vendors OD

they make a GV for a 'glide? huh, learn something new everyday.

And its the same as having a t400 or t350 that tons of people drive everyday... final drive is still 1:1.

2nd is 1.0 right? Should only spin about 3,000rpm at 65mph with a 28" tire & 3.73s. That's not to bad.

Hit up Sux2bu, I think he is at 3k @ 60 with 31" truck tires and 4:10 rear gear.

You should be slightly less. Put the 28s on and drive in 3rd (D) and see where she's at. 3rd is still 1:1 in the 60e.

A good TH-350 would work well with that setup. A TH-400 would be stronger if you ever did a big stroker engine with nitrous. You don't make enough HP as you sit right now you justify a 'Glide. It would be pretty lazy off the 'brake, even with a 1.80 first gear.

SUX2BU got a TH350/400 Combo..

There is no 3rd on a Glide...

NASTY-TA got a PowerGlide.. IIRC, he was asking the same as you not long ago... I dont know how is he going to drive that thing on the street but maybe he can give you some advice...

3rd gear on a th400/th350 and 2nd gear on a powerglide are the same 1:1 so there is no difference if there are 2 gears or 36 gears, as long as the ratio is the same it's no different.

you can build a th350 or a th400 to handle just as much as a glide.
For a car with a glide to be fast you either have to make CRAZY power or be CRAZY light. If your both then you will fly!
lots of guys with avg power and avg weight have slowed down going to a glide.

I guess all those old school cars that came with th350's, th400's and PG's STOCK didn't go faster than 50 mph huh?

I would suggest a built Th350 or Th400.. You can go with a Glide, but you will need more gear than a 3.73. Most cars that run a glide have at least 4.11 gears. It will be a pig out of the hole with a 3.73 gear..

A friend of mine is running a glide in his Z and he is running high 6's in the 1/8th with a STOCK motor with headers, ypipe, bullet muffler, 9in with 4.30 gears, and a 150 shot. His interior is basically gutted and he has a cage installed and bmr rear suspension.

Personally, I picked up a th400.. and I do still plan to drive it aorund some. Not alot, under 2000 miles a year, including driving it to the track a couple times, which is 150 mile round trip.

The glide would be good if HUGE power is in your future, like 900 rwhp or more. Give Ken @ eastside a call, they ran a th400, and had a glide in the black race car they were running, he could probably tell you more about hwen the glide is needed. For what it's worth, the th400 I have, is the one that was in the black car.. and has since been all redone from hughes.

One good thing about a glide, if you spring for the dedenbar case, no shield is needed... not that the carbon fiber shileds you can get for a th400 is all that heavy. The glide is also a lighter tranny, as you seem focused on having a light car.. but like stated above, I'm not sure how much power is really needed to get a car with a glide moving with the gearing that 1st usually has.

I'd vote th400, or a glide. Some will tell you a th350 can handle it... but Ken advised me against it, as he felt that it wouldn't handle big power, which I will eventually make.

Get a 3 spd......the only reason I don't have a TH400 in the '68 is because the glide is more consistent for bracket racing. I run 5.9x's in the 1/8th now, but it'd go 5.8x's or better with the lower 1st gear I'm sure. Once you get much over 1000fwhp you'll probably want the glide if your still on a 10" tire just so you can hook it up easier.

Those are a couple of the reasons i went with a Glide...... I was dead set on a TH400 when i called up Rossler.

I talked to Carl for quite a while. For me it was the 1.80 first gear that will help me.... being a turbo car it will be easier for me to get out of the hole and 60' better.
Also with a Turbo car the fall off from 1st to 2nd isnt that bad.
Im running 3.73's and 28"s also.....
Plus it is lighter and on the $$ note it is cheaper to build then a th400 to hold the same hp and IF id ever breaks its cheaper to fix.
Give Rossler a call and talk to Carl and see what he has to say about your whole setup and your goals.

Who's Converter you looking at??

The GEAR VENDORS in a combination with the Powerglide is an affordable, reliable, and very efficient package. This is a superior alternative for most cars looking to go to a 3-speed. The GEAR VENDORS .78 to 1 ratio allows you to go to a numerically higher rear gear to improve your 60ft. times and get it all back with the overdrive. The reciprocal of our ratio is 1.28 so a car that currently runs a 4.56 rear could go to a 5.84 without loss of top end. You will have these improvements with reduced cost, greater reliability, and lower parasitic losses when compared to 3-speeds. Using a lower rear end ratio also lets you keep a close ratio spread on your glide for more power at the 1-2 shift. Most cars with 1200hp or less will also find benefit in using 1st-over which will net a really nice 4spd spread of 1.76, 1.33, 1.00, 0.78.

The overdrive is switched on with 12-volts and so is easily adapted to steering wheel buttons or automated through our Auto-Shift sequencer. The product is ideally suited in stock form for cars with 1200hp or less and in this case is virtually indestructible, literally running for seasons of use without maintenance other than fluid. Cars with more than 1200+ horsepower can be accommodated but you should call the factory so hydraulic issues dealing with clutch ramp timing can be properly adjusted for your application weight and hp.

You forgot to add the Ouch of a price to it......

$ 2,795.00 for a glide plus a new driveshaft............
