SFI 25.2 Mustang/LSx build "The Renegade"
#1084
Well this week did not have a good ending. We along with a few others are starting to find the limitations of the LSx block. Shawn and I tore the block down and found some issues that may or may not be able to be fixed in an effort to be reliable @ 2500hp. We have talked to Andy Jensen and he seems to think that we're going to need to do a few custom parts to get the block to live @ 2500+hp and 9000rpm.
At this point we're trying to decide if we keep going with the LSx or switch to a 550+ CID Big Block. Honestly I really am questioning GM's advertising of 2500hp capable block, everyone that I have had look at it said no way no how.

Just amazing, even if you do change to a BBC(or ford lol), you can stil say you have done it with a ls1.
If you do end up switching, how much faster does one want to go?

Honestly its more about reliability. I want to be able to go to the track beat the **** out of it and not worry about anything breaking. The last thing I want to worry about is going to the finals and throwing a rod like Alex did yesterday, he would have won the 5k.

Pictures of what ya found would be really nice... I know GM would like to keep all the problems with these blocks hush hush, but I am 100% sure there have been several failures, some due to a "casting flaw" which I'd like to throw the BS flag up at that, but I'm intrested in the problems that you have found Phil.
Take it to PM if need be.... I've been waiting on the alum version of the block before even starting to think about the next powerplant, but if you have some proof with the iron block that the alum one is gonna have a serious weakness.. I'd like to see it, possibly save me a whole bunch of time and effort in the long run.

Since they won't let you run at the LSX Shootout with the Ford body, have you looked at the Warhawk block? I don't know if it is better or worse, just a question. I'm just thinking that staying with an LS platform would probably save some money, but maybe not in the long run.

going this fast over time with a newer technology of the lsx platform i believe the BBC will be cheaper and faster... it will cost more initially to switch ofcourse but the options and availability will be much better....

That's the point I'm torn at. As long as ly ls2 is plugging along I'm gonna keep running it, but when it's tired and I need to build the next bullet, I dunno what it's gonna be. In the mean time, I'm gonan continue to try to do things that would make a swap to another power plant easier (like getting a BS3 so if I wanted to stick with EFI on a BBC it would be an easy swap, cutting the cowl off and putting a joe van o hood on the car so there's a ton more room, cutting the radiator support out and putting a small radiator in the car that's mounted farther foreward)
