How much do you think you have in this build total?

Before this last deal we were just over 30k. Shawn has the motor now and he'll be cordinating the parts and stuff so I can get working on my next house. We broke ground this week and the concrete guys are coming in next week. I'll be going between both projects for awhile but we're at a standstill with the motor until we get the new crank.

7.59 for $30k is actually encouraging to me. I would have guessed a little more. I know you have done 99% of the labor, so that helps. I'm trying to run a 7 for the least amount possible (used parts where it doesn't matter, and trading labor as much as I can). Following your build up has been a huge help to me. I am a home designer and builder (mostly high end stuff), if I can help you or answer any questions, pm me anytime.

I am a jack of all trades. We're building a 5000 sq/ft rambler with 3 car garage and a 40x50 detached shop on 6 acres over in hughesville.

Phil,
Been following the build for awhile and am amazed how quickly you sorted everything out and got this car MOVING.

On your old engine were you running steel rods? If so which ones? Also, were you running into problems with the rods buckling at all, is this why you are now switching to AL rods?

This is a great build to follow and it is nice of you to document the problems and fixes that you ran into during the build. I am sure it will help others who are building similar cars in the future. Best of luck on to you with the new engine.

I was running Howards Billet 6.125" rods from Kurt Urban. They were the same rods that were used in Casper set the ET/MPH record of 6.x @ 205. The rods have been throughly checked and show no signs of wear or abuse. The max RPM we saw was 8100. The reason we switched was we need to push the RPMs to 9000 and a lighter rotating assembly will definitely help. Kurt Urban has done testing with the Howards rods and have not failed to this point. My rods have 10 passes on them only 2 passes we ran boost over 22psi and look brand new.

Well, they have a claim of supporting 2xxx HP with the block, you seem to be having issues...

Id be contacting them, I mean, if I was one of the engineers on the project id definitely be interested in any defects.

Not a chance. Engineering types are often overly proud of their design and will deflect blame before owning any. An engine build has so many variables that it's easy to blame a supporting part or a set up error.

Hell, at least it's better than the 302 splitting in half. Eventually, they found a fix for that so there's hope.

I can tell you this, I am the first to push products as well as the first call a product out for being sub par. If this round of parts does not fix the problem everyone will know.

Valley Girdle or no Valley Girdle, those things still split. The stock 302 block is filed under JUNK lol.

Lol, yeah stock 302s sure like to shred right down the middle. Makes for some fun carnage pics though.

Phil, not trying to be pushy, just wondering. I applaud you for pioneering this, its certainly not cheap.

would the cost/weight of a big block have been a barrier to running your goals?
