Default Low drag cars, anyone ovaled tubing

I need to find a method to oval some 5" aluminum tubing without losing any area. Has anyone ever ovaled some tubing and not have it collapse? I'm thinking we need to make a JIG.

thanks for the link, I've seen dr gas and a few others offer it. I've got 15' of tubing that I'd like to try and make work. And more importantly they don't offer the size I need.

i dont know but id think if u heated it properly then put it in a press it wouldnt crack. i know ive ovaled plenty of stainless with no heat but its much more durable.

(remove non-sponsor link) If they don't have it, they can make it.

Spintech makes everything you need Phil....... The guy down there is named Ron.... and he's the ****.

(remove non-sponsor link)

I have 4" oval true dual exhaust on my car..... They have round to oval adapters in whatever size you need. I have 3.5" collectors on my car and I used 3.5" round to 4" oval adapters and then goes into 4" oval inlet and outlet spintechs.... then oval 4" tailpipes....

here's some pics of their stuff..

They have up to 5" Oval.... they have straight, offset, 45 degree bend sections, etc etc...

how long a piece do you need to oval? also does it need to turn or will it be a straight run?
if it needs to turn i think you will need to do that first then oval it, but it will be more likely to crack where it was bent. I see you have a bunch of tube you want to use rather than buy some. do you have a height that the tube needs to be? I am just trying to get a better idea what you need to end up with, then see if i can help in any way

The dr. gas stuff is nice, I was gonna go that route until we took some measurments and realized that a 3.5 inch round pipe would fit where I wanted to go with it.

Granted I'm not down on the ground that bad though, your mustang is low Phil.

It would be a real pita, but you could always run the single pipe and cut it in 1/2, then add material to the top and bottom and make the total area the same if you want to use the material you already have... but that wouldn't realy be much fun I don't think.

How far back do you want to/have to go with it, please don't tell me out the back....

The piece of tubing is straight, I really only need to oval it in a section that passes under the front transmount. I'll find a pic...

yes I want to run it out the back.

This pic was from mockup but the downpipe flattens out and runs just inside the frame rail...

Not sure what to tell ya.... 3 inch pipe cut in 1/2 with a flat strip added. GOnna suck to make, or buy some dr. gas pipe.

You definately have a challenge on the routing of that, I can already tell. At least the motor is solid mounted so you can solid mount the exhaust, that will help some, clearance can be very little that way

my exhaust guy has a large press.
puts a piece of steel plate on each side and flattens her out!
doesnt look like real oval pipe, but is a helluva lot cheaper!

another option ive seen is building a jig out of flat stock, with studs every 6".
keep turning the nuts until the plate flattens the pipe out.
good luck!
anything can be done.

hmm, for a small section like that, i think you could make a press block out of some wood maybe....thats guessing you have a press handy. if not then possibly some all thread (big lol) and some creativity. maybe using a floor jack and a truck or something heavy would work too. i think you will need a radiused block so it doesnt wrinkle it too bad

i didnt think about this beforehand. you could take some rectangle stock and make a c notch in your tranny crossmember, leaving the bottom open for exhaust to cross through. or at the bottom and run it over the top.
its an idea.

You could remake teh tranny corssmember to atach to the metal brackets that are above the crossmember you have now. I know it sucks to remake sutff, but you have a literal stovepipe you're trying to shove under the car LOL
