Default driveshaft weights

i was wondering what the weight difference would be between a aluminum and chromoly driveshaft. I am wondering if it is worth the extra couple bucks to go aluminum.

Not in my eyes. I say go chromoly and save a buck. I'm not a big fan of alum. driveshafts after breaking two of them (one being an aftermarket rated for 1000hp).

my car weighed 2940 before the recent weight mods with an iron block. I am going for the stock internal record so every pound counts. i am hoping to have the car weigh in the 2750 area without a driver.

Eric at midwest chasis told me his 3inch Chromoly driveshafts only weigh 1-2lbs heavier than the 3.5inch aluminum driveshaft (can't remember the brand but it starts with a P?).

My mistake.

You should be able to get away with a 4in Aluminium shaft

If you're going for a record, carbon fiber, if you want something that you can beat on for a long, long time a 3" moly or 3.5" moly (real tuff) will be the best bet in the long run.

I'd run the most durable shaft considering broken ones can crash your car or break a lot of parts, pinions, trans tail housings etc.

If you are capable of breaking a record every bit helps but I doubt that the drive shaft will be your record breaking factor.

Mine is a Denny's Nitrous ready Chromoly, It is 44 3/4 from the center of one U joint to the other, it has a yoke to fit a powerglide and all together it weighs 19 Lbs. (I just weighed it.)

Peace of mind is priceless.

Doen't sound like he is looking for a piece of mind as much as a chance at a time slip

the stock motor doesnt make alot of power so i think any material would work. I was just wondering if anyone has weighed 2 shafts same length but different materials.

I had a 4" aluminum and a Strange 3.5" CM, the aluminum was 5lbs lighter. Up to you if its worth it it but changing the driveshaft alone never made any measurable difference in ET/MPH. I noticed the weld around one of the yokes starting to crack and I **** canned the aluminum one, might have lasted 2 passes, may have lasted 2000. But being a member of the driveshaft through a rear slick at 150mph club years ago it wasnt worth taking a chance for me.

But with a stock engine the lighter shaft may make more of a difference and breaking one wont be an issue most likely..
