406rwhp/390rwtq - PRC 2.5 heads/TR Cheater cam - stock manifolds/cats
I just finished installing a set of PRC 2.5 heads on my '00 Trans Am. The install went real quick and I was very pleased with the results, especially going through the stock manifolds/cats!
A quick run down on the car's mods:
'00 Trans Am, 131k miles (stock shortblock), 6-speed
- Whisper lid
- TR ported TB
- ASP pulley
- LS6 intake
- Hooker catback
- Thunder Cheater cam (214/230 .601/.578 117 LSA)
- PRC 2.5 5.3l cylinder heads (11.0:1 compression ratio)
- stock manifolds/cats
- SPEC stage 3 clutch/steel flywheel
I re-baselined the car Friday night and put down 364rwhp/359rwtq. This is practically identical to what the car made last July when I installed the cam. The only thing changed was the addition of PRC stage 2.5 5.3l heads. This resulted in 406rwhp/390rwtq! This was exactly how I drive the car on the street- full exhaust, belts, etc. A gain of 42rwhp/31rwtq is incredible for $1500 outright, including new GM 5.3l castings! I didn't have my LS1edit cable to tune the car, so I'll be re-dynoing the car later this week to make some air/fuel and timing adjustments. There is definitely a few hp/tq left in the tune. The tune in the car now is practically a stock tune, other than a 7k revlimiter.
Dyno graph - Before and after PRC stage 2.5 heads
I posted some pics and flow numbers on the heads a week or so ago. Here is the thread:
https://ls1tech.com/forums/generation-iii-internal-engine/384353-prc-2-5-heads-initial-impressions-flow-numbers-inside.html
I can't wait to get the longtubes on the car to see what they are going to be worth. I'm hoping around 20-25hp with them and the off-road y-pipe.
The car is a completely different animal now!
Big thanks to Jason@PRC for a killer set of heads. Also, thanks to John, Brad, and Natalie for help with the install.

Very nice power. No one will ever hear you coming either. Great stealth. Killer head gains.

Thanks Patrick! The heads worked out even better than I thought! I wish I could have used a Cometic .045" gasket, but Thunder was out of stock of them for this weekend. I'll install those when I go through the shortblock around Christmas time. I ended up using the GM MLS gaskets. A few of the cylinders had 30% leakdown!

Hey Jason,
Can you comment how how this car feels now?
I have been thinking long and hard about putting a set of afr 205s on my completely stock '03Z06. I have seen some killer results and like the idea of keeping a completely stock exhaust system. I am thinking this combo will not make so much low end torque to overwhealm the tires down low, but be an animal up top. A few have posted dyno results in the 410 RWHP area on Z06s bolt ons/ stock cam/ stock manifolds & exhaust).
Thanks,
-Nick

Thanks guys! The shortblock has definitely seen better days! I can't complain though as it is still making respectable power. I would have rebuilt it this weekend, but just didn't have the time.
Blake, you know me too well... I can't leave anything alone.
Nick, the car is a completely different now - way more power with 0 loss in driveability! Throttle reponse in all gears is much better and the car just pulls like crazy now. Traction in 1st and 2nd is non-existant. Before the heads, the car would just haze the tires in 1st and hook in 2nd. Time for some Nittos.

No problem John! You can drive it anytime you want. Thanks again for the help this weekend. I hope to tune the car Thursday night if all works out, and maybe put the headers on this weekend???

No TRak came for me! I'll be sticking with the current cam for a good while. You can't beat it in terms of power and driveability. I'm really amazed at the power it is making given its size @.050". Lobe area is a good thing!

Be sure and save your exhaust manifolds and cats because you may miss the stealthy sound after you've run headers for a while.

Don't believe that "I like the stealthy sound" BS for a second. In 2 months that car will have 16" header extensions and a roll cage in it. This car is taking the same track as his daily driver Honda Accord did

I'm confused. Patrick made 11 less HP than you did Jason but he had AFR heads, a tune and I would hope less leakage past the rings. Doesn't make sense to me. Am I missing something?
