alot of people (mostly kids imho) look at the cost of a shortblock and think thats all they need to TRY and come close to these numbers they see on the internet...... They don't take into account heads,exhaust,fuel systems,induction,tuning,valvetrain,drivetrain ,etc etc etc.

is that $10k+ for a professional install or do it yourself?
when I built my LT1 (granted it was an LT1, not an LS1, but LS1 prices have come down since I did my LT1) I built a forged stroker, fully ported heads, intake, custom cam, full valvetrain, with full exhaust and a built transmission and I still didn't top $10k but I did the majority of the work myself.
getting back to topic, awesome numbers. cant wait to see what she does with a more revised cam!

you can factor in the price of install.. but with serious motors like the 408 with l92 heads (although those heads are CHEAP) with the l76 intake, headers, fuel system, ect ect ect you cant expect to be UNDER 10 grand.
A built stroked lt1 should be around 6-8 grand. But a 408.. ALOT more. but the horse will be better too.

im thinking just the motor alone, i dont plan to have it for al ong time and am going to upgrade the tranny, rear, fuel, and suspension before i dive into a new motor. a cam and a 100 shot will keep me happy for a while

damn you guys made me recalculate roughly how much I put into my LT1 firebird. im glad I dont have a wife or she would kill me 
but you're all right. I tell my friends all the time that it takes alot of cash and patience with this hobby. takes some good budgeting and sometimes periods of time living like a hermit lol.
the price to build an LT1 compared to an LS1 is not very different.
383/396 stroker LT1 shortblocks approach $4000, iron 408 short blocks cost about the same. GOOD ported LT1 heads with a custom cam will set you back $2000. the L92 heads and a cam will cost less than that. L76 intake will obviously cost more than a ported LT1 intake. everything else is similar in price. valvetrain/injectors/throttle body/headers/tranny/stall/fuel/rear. but in the end you're right one will make alot more power

gotta say... at first I wasn't impressed with the results... but looking a little more closely, this looks like a setup with a lot of potential!
almost 500 foot-pounds of torque to the rear wheels is quite impressive
kinda makes those thinking of a mild FI application think twice.. heh
