Default NOT happy with DYNO results...LG G5X3 cam, Pro Longtubes, "mail order" tune

So I just came back from my DYNO run after installing the LG G5X3 cam and an LG "mail order" tune.

Needless to say, I'm NOT happy with the results. LG SWORE up and down that their G5X3, Pro Longtubes, and their tune would make an EASY 420-430 RWHP. I'm at 410. :-? Even all of their posted dyno runs show 430ish RWHP. What the heck..I'm so bummed. I was actually expecting a hair better than 430. I had the whole engine out, did the re-ring procedure, and lightly ported/polished the heads when doing the cam install.

My car is an '01 Z06 with 35,000 miles. Here is the before and after results. Anyone see different numbers with the same set-up? I'm convinced something's gotta be wrong.

BEFORE the CAM install...

AFTER the CAM install...

and this is what I was EXPECTING...

so according to these figures..i'm SHORT 21 RWHP and 20 RWTQ. What's going on???

Looks like it could be leaned out a little...why didnt you get a dyno tune? Mail order tunes don't always work that great. Every car is different.

Looks like a safe mail order tune so you won't blow up your engine.

You want every little bit get a real tune.

i guess your removal of the engine and tweaking has nothing to do with the "low" numbers? also having a fat mail order tune is not helping you. i'm not real sure that a 12.0:1 a/f ratio will net you prime results in the 6-6.5k (peak) range. i assume you've checked the compression and valvetrain to relieve yourself of any responsibility before attempting to put your foot up lgmotorsports' ***?

Word , that was my initial thought of your post as the tuner was conservative in his tune instead of being extreme especially if you told him in detail what you were doing to your engine .
Also , your numbers are not that bad off but my money says you can get more hp with a dyno tune . In fact for the money if you are really into it and seeing that you are taking your car to the next level it may be an option to buy the software and learn to tune it yourself . This will allow you to tweak it everytime you mod your car in the future and can always be sold for a decent return of your $$$ unlike a one time dyno tune which can not be resold .

Get it professionally dynotuned , I just tuned a cam only 99 C5 vette 2 weeks ago with that same cam that came in with a mail order tune and he made around the same hp as you and 423 rwhp when I was done tuning it . Your car looks a little rich up top , mail order tunes should generally be safe because all these cars respond differently . I would bet you would be closer to 430 rwhp with a real dyno tune especially with a Z06 .

I'm impressed that their canned tune did as well as it did with your AFR...

It sounds like you're kind of new to this. There are only like 100 variables that could be responsible for your "low" numbers as you put it.

Part of having a fast car is continuing to work with your combination until it's perfected. You're simply just not through yet.

Don't be frustrated and give up. You're almost to where you want to be.

yeah guys i figured it is probably the tune. i didnt really put much thought into it untill i read all your posts. i feel better now. i actually bought HPTuners and a wideband o2 and i'm going to tune it myself.

The motor work was top notch, as I own a shop and my top tech and I did all the work ourselves.

And someone said something about putting my foot up LG's ***...lol. I like LGM alot and have the upmost respect for them. I wasn't ******* them in my post, but I was MORE concerened that something might be wrong with my car considering the fact that by their claims and dyno numbers almost EVERYONE with this exact set-up is putting down 430 RWHP "out of the box."

thanks so much for all the insight. these boards rock!

crappy tune (mail order tunes) = crappy results. GET A DYNO TUNE.

Yeah I agree with you.

I think if you did those bolt-ons you'll be more than happy.

Don't forget about the intake. Switching to a Vararam, Honker, or even Halltech will gain you power over the zip-tie mod.

I think you have your answer already...I think your expectations were high for a mail order tune. I think those are just to get you running, make the car idle, but most times but the WOT tables are almost never dead nuts on to maximize your set-up. Between the bolt-ons and a fine tune with timing and AFR you should meat or exceed your expectations.

BTW...I think your results are awesome for cam only.

I too would say its in the tune. Here's some food for thought. I went to LG Motorsports in July 2005 and had a 78 mm FAST, LG Pro Longtube headers and g5x3 cam. I jumped from 320/330 rwhp/rwtq to 400 rwhp and 385+ rwtq if memory serves. So 78 mm Fast + LG's Pro Longtubes + g5x3 Cam = extra 80 rwhp / 55+ rwtq

Car ran like a monster, went bact the next year and got afr 205 heads, ewp, and asp u/d pully. PM in a few days for the final results of what they are doing to my car. Should be making 500+ rwhp and 450+ rwtq N/A

LG Motorsports knows what they are doing, and have done a great job for lots of people at a fair price.

To sum up get a dyno tune to fix the "SAFE" parameters of the mail order tune that are holding you back from making more power.

Hey bro I thought I was going to make more power as well, but you have to be realistic, each car is different. 2 cars done the exact same way will not have Identical hp/tq curves. Good luck, and let us know what happens after you retune that beast. Probably another 8-15 rwhp GOOD LUCK !!!!!!!

thanks for the info! i'm thinking about adding with a 90mm FAST, ported LS2 t.b, and a Haltech next week. With a tune...i should get some pretty good power out of that. i know the intake is a restrictive component in my set-up at this time.

You can't hardly expect maximum results from a mail order tune regardless of who did it. I agree with the comments above, get a real dyno tune with wideband readings and you should reach your goal easily..
