Anybody still doing 383's?

Default Anybody still doing 383's?

I was thinking about doing a 383 but I haven't heard much about them in a long time. I would like a bigger cubed motor but I can afford an LS2 based stroker and I don't really want a iron block because of the weight.

Don't know, but they will be worth the wait if you can't since they have a larger bore.

You will not see as many 383s now due to the L92 heads which are cheap and require a minimum 4.0 bore. The 383 does not have a bore that big.

If a 402 stoker is out of the budget I dont think this is an option. There are people doing 383's with success. It does allow you to use your existing block. Replace crank, rods and pistons.

with a 402 you need to buy a block and crank, with an ls3 block you can use all factory parts which are cheaper.

Well, I would want to have forged rods and pistons at least not all stock parts.

I'm doing a 383 right now. Weber Racing is building it. I've been waiting on Morel for a long time now and I'm really starting to get aggrevated. I wanted to be racing by 4th of July but now it is looking like I'll be lucky to even get my engine by the end of the month!

Anyway, specs are:
3.905 bore
4.000 stroke
ETP 225 heads
58cc combustion chambers
-8.8 flat piston
-.005 deck height
.040 head gasket
3.910 gasket bore

SCR is 11.65
DCR is 8.77
Quench is .035.

K1 Crank and Rods, custom Wiseco pistons.

I'm hoping for 480 rwhp unlocked.

Go with a 383. Use the 5.3 heads and put somethink like a 236-242 112 cam in there.

put my 383 in this year but if it wasnt for a killer deal i got on the short block i woulda gone 402 for the little extra it would have cost

I'm not looking for an all out motor but I do want it to make some good power/torque to drive it everyday on the street. My 346 seems to not have any lowend grunt unless you flash the stall and then it just smokes the tires.

Why not sell your factory short block (or the entire engine as a package minus ECU) and pick up a budget forged 383 stroker from a sponsor? With the parts your current running you should be able to get a few grand for your complete assembled engine, then go out a use that towards a budget forged 383 or even an iron 408? The power you will be making out of the 408 will surpass the weight and you said your not looking for a track car but something fun on the street so why not go iron?

Figure if you can get 2500-3000 for your current engine then the assembled 408 would only be around $3600? If your going to reuse your block your going to need it machine and sent to a machien shop to be clean up, then have all the parts assembled and balanced. Its just easier to buy an assembled short block or entire long block.

My car does go to the track but I don't want an all out track motor. I drive my car more on the street than the track so I want a great mannered motor that makes good power.

Well a big CI engine is going to make gobs of torque and hp and will be able to handle a larger cam while still idleing fairly well. Howvere if that is not attainable then your other option could be to keep the stock CI and maybe pick up a tsp budget 346/347 shortblock with forged internals. That way you could stay with the same setup, sell your old short block (minus cam of course unless you want to change it) and up the spray. If your set on larger CI maybe get the tsp or equivalent full assembled 383 short block? Only reason i suggest the assembled short block is that if you dont have a good machine shop to install the components (if you wont be doing the install) then the machine work and balancing you could be out a ton of money due to an improperly setup shortblock.

Also for what its worth I see ls1 complete engines (stock minus harnesses) go for around $1500 all the time on ebay so if you figure in the heads and cam then you could see $2000+ IMO
