Talking Dyno'ed the SS

I had a chance to dyno and tune my 2001 Camaro SS at Haddad Motorsports today. I had previously street tuned it meticulously, so well that the fuel trims average between -1% to 0% throughout the driving range. First pass on the dyno resulted in 336rwhp and about 370rwtq. After I played around with the timing (didn't like more, nor less) and rearranging the fuel, I arrived at 342rwhp and 397rwtq consistently. It did hit peak of 345rwhp and 398rwtq, but I couldn't back it up. I also decided to do a locked converter run for comparison's sake, that netted 361rwhp and 391rwtq. As you can see in the graph, the thin line is the unlocked results, while the thick line is the locked converter results.

My setup is a factory stock LQ4 long block with only Hooker LTs, ORY, and Catback. It does have a B&M 3000 converter and 3.73 gears out back.

Generous dyno, especially with the tq #s. Obviously not a Dyno Jet.

Do you have a comparison of your street tune Vs. dyno tune?

This is a Dynapack Dyno, local Dynojets read very closely to this dyno. Typically 10rwhp/10rwtq variance from my experience. This dyno measures actual rear axle torque, something a dynojet has to calculate.

Yes, the first numbers I mentioned were as driven off the street (336/370). Although I did not print out the first run, if that was what you were asking? I was mostly concentrating on the locked vs unlocked point.

Thanks Steve! Too bad pedalling didn't help, like previously. I had a feeling it was good, as the driver's compartment got filled with tire smoke.

It measures the actual torque at the axles, then it divides the results by the gear ratio to be used to calculate power. Since the drivetrain loss is not known, and the power number is back calculated from the true torque value and gear ratio, it is no longer at the axle. Hence why they call it flywheel. It does have a drivetrain conversion factor, but it is set to (factory settings of)1:1 as Dynapack suggests if the drivetrain loss is not known. Hope this answers your question?

Update:

I took advantage of a private track rental at one of our better tracks out here, Famoso Raceway (elevation = 600'). This was a good day to race as the DA was around 2000'. Although I ran my SS as driven on the street: Riken 275/40/17 street tires and chrome SS 10-spoke wheels, front sway bar installed, no track tricks. I was able to attain the numbers in my sig: 12.830 @ 107.25 mph on a 1.826 60' with a DA of 2193'. My race weight was 3720lbs (car weighed 3460lbs with LS1, +60lbs for the LQ4, +200lbs for myself = 3720lbs). Best 60' was a 1.818 with a 107.60 mph on a previous run (12.839). Not too shabby for $150 street tires.

Why do you say that? This dyno extremely accurate. The 1/4 mile track I used before the cam swap is not open anymore for me to test out the new cam numbers, it has been in for only 2 weeks.

That is a mindless comment. The Dynapack works brilliantly as a tool for accurately tuning vehicles. George does an outstanding job tuning all of our LSX based cars.

George knows what he is doing; he is a MORE than competent tuner. Nice numbers, bet the car is a bit more fun to drive now And you have to love the sound. Congrats.

I don't know what thing in your signature is with cones and turning and what-not but...
-edit- doh! guess that sig is over at HPT

Thanks for the kind words Steve, it means a lot.

As for the sig pic, I was practicing driving in crowded public parking lots.
