Stall Testing in MD (Carroll)
Hey guys, I've been thinking, mostly due to reading opinions online, that the only real way to determine what stall speed you prefer from a torque converter is to actually drive some stalled cars to see what you do and don't like. I'm not planning on doing a stall for a while but I think somewhere between 3000-3600 is what I would want (stock 2.73 gears, at least until a new rear is in the cards).
I was wondering if anyone is the in Eldersburg, Westminster, Sykesville areas of Carroll County, MD with a stall in that range and if so if you can give me some details on the car and your opinions and then possibly setup a meeting so I could test it out, if that would be cool.

I would do your gears first IMHO. 3.23s - 3.73s depending on how much you care about fuel mileage. Then that becomes a factor in how much stall you'll want. I have a Yank 4000 with 3.23s, it could use more gear. Maybe 3000 with 2.73s or 3.23s... 3600 with 3.42s or 3.73s...

Gears are a waste on an auto car with 323s-you gain nothing. Get a converter and hang on. Best mod for the A4. But agree get some gears in it too since you have 273s
I keep my Camaro in Westminster if you want a ride. I run DRs full time though. My trans tune is not perfect but you can get an idea

I don't really agree with that.
Gears and Converter choice will have a signifigant impact on the final combination. Especially when your in the testing and tuning phase. While you will probably get "more" of a change with converters compared to a gear swap, it should not be discounted for.
Tire/Weight/Suspension and how that tire hits can certainly be effected by final gear ratio and with some cars can influence what it runs on the top end as well as tire choice.
I have always been a fan of picking one towards then end of modding a set up and having it built for that need. I hear you on ball parking but again, thats just in my opinion.

2.73's suck and will make any stall less tolerable.
I've had 3.23's 3.42, 3.91.
For an all around good street/strip car with 26" tires I would recommend 3.42's in the A4. You can find guys dumping stock 10 bolts all the time. I would pick one up cheap and do the swap. 3.73's if you want it a little more aggressive, I find the 3.91's make the car less of a street car on the highway than I care for.
However the stall is your best bet for performance at the track, don't waste your time with anything under 3500. These cars shine with big stalls, if you are concerned with drive-ability take a look at the yank ss3600. Then a year later you'll probably go bigger
Like they say pick the one you want then go one size up (assuming your staying NA)
Gears all said and done net you barely anything compared to a stall and mpg suffers. My advice is a set of modest gears and a big stall. Once your up to speed and the converter locks up its like driving any other car.

Sounds good man, I get nervous driving other peoples cars anyway but I'd like to take you up on that. When are you usually free?
