Where to buy a helmet
I probabaly should have bought one at the Bike shop near TByrnes for the $99 they wanted when I was at Toms getting the exhaust installed because when I called the local bike shop, Kelly's house of Harleys in Billerica, they wanted $169 for 3/4 helmet!
Is that a normal price or not?
If not, where should I get a helmet?

All IHRA (NED) and LVD (NHRA) want this year if youre running 11.50 or above is a snell 90 or better. It might save you some money. Just make sure somewhere under the "hat" is a tag that says snell 90, snell 2000. The techs will want to see that.

I should have reworded my question better.
I think $169 for a helmet is a bit steep, am I right?
If so, where did you guys go locally for a better priced helmet?
Also, I am aware of the Snell rating.
Thanks.

Launching!
I agree, ebay is the way to go. I picked up a $300 helmet for only $150. It was a good deal, just make sure it is posted as SNELL rated. Ask the buyer before purchasing!!

just remember its your head in that helmet, so dont go super cheap. I was happy with my simpson openface I got from Jegs. I got last season a carbon fiber full-face from HMS motorsport for 250 and it is great.
Also NED still allows SA90,MA90 but most other froms of motorsport require a SA95,MA95 and the better helmets are SA2000, MA2000 or better. DOT does not fly anywhere.

After seeing the racer who went up in smoke with an open face, and got 3rd degree burns all over his neck and face, i would never buy an open face.
the faster you go the better the helmut should be, but its your head so no matter what keep it in tacked.
i would say for a decent helmut anyplace from 100 to 200 is resonable depending on the ratings. alot of the motorcycle helmuts have fetures your paying for that you dont need in a car, so keep that in mind.
jegs/summit sell cheep helmuts as do some of our sponsors.

Another thing to think about. The SCCA is thinking about banning the use of full face helmets in cars with active airbag systems. It seems that the force of the airbag hitting the chinbar of the helmet car cause serious spinal injury. This comes out after I get a helmet, and went fullface because I did not like the risk of eating a steering wheel.
