Fuel pump went .. The gas is what keep the fuel pump cool and when you run out of gas and try to start it you tend to burn the pump out.

That's it. These pumps ussually burn out if the gas runs out.

You don't need the whole tank. Just a fuel pump.

Racetronix sells a replacement walbro pump. I just installed one this weekend by cutting the access hole in the rear deck and it was pretty easy.

I did this on an LT1, I'm not sure if the tanks changed or not. I have pics of the whole process though, here is where you cut. I can get the exact measurements later on today.

When you get through the deck you will see the fuel lines and the top section of the pump assembly on top of the tank Just don't pry off that wiring harness because you are not supposed to unplug it.

Drop the gas tank instead of cutting up your trunk

Remove the panhard rod and brace, drop the exhaust, remove the bottom shock bolts( this will allow the rear to drop), remove the heat shields, remove gas filler door and the one bolt in the filler neck, disconnect the lines, and remove straps. Looks like more work than it is and you are not cutting up your car. I guess if you are doing it to your own car and you don't mind, that fine. Just make sure that if you sell the car, tell the buyer that you cut part of the trunk

Well the filter is inside of a bucket thats located on the fuel pump assembly which is kinda big. You need to break the glue seals on the bucket then take the pump out, install the new one and let the new glue dry to seal the bucket. Then you reinstall heres a pic of the bucket and actual fuel pump. This is the assembly and this is the pump itself which is inside the bucket which is the tan thing at the bottom.

Now don't get me wrong here, the correct way is to take the tank out but some people have their exhaust welded so it makes it more of a hassle to cut it and then have it re-welded. This car was a 95 and has 125k or so on it so theres no real worry about market value later on. This way didn't take long and it worked like a charm. The biggest reason to do this was incase the pump turned out to be junk or we forgot to connect something we could just go in again through the access hole in a few minutes.
