Default 4 Year Registration on new car purchase in NJ.

I ordered a new car and was told that I need to buy a 4 year registraion for it. I have never heard of this before, I thought all NJ registrations are 1 year. For those of you who work at dealers, is the normal?

Yup.. and it costs plenty, too!

But- at least you don't have to mess with MV for a while.

NJ sucks

That is a dumb rule. How many people actually keep there cars for more then 4 years?

I thought this was a policy of my dealer only so I thought maybe I could persuade them to do the 1 year registration once the vehicle arrives.

Thanks for the Info.

That's exactly why they're doing it. To get more people to pay more money up front, instead of going through cars, and maybe skating by a year by getting one with a more updated registration. When I bought my truck last year, the dick salesman told me about it. I think it was 3yrs, but may have been 4.

You can renew the registration on line, so no need to visit the DMV each year.

I guess I will decide when the car comes in. There is an extra $500 rebate if I take delivery before Nov 30th. The car is supposed to be built the week of the 20th. So if the dealer receives it before the 30th, I will let them do the registration, otherwise I might go to the DMV myself if they allow me to do a 1 year registration.

Thanks for the replys.

Yeah you have to do 4 year registration. If it is a shorter term lease, it can be customized. I think its ok, because the registration is good as long as the inspection sticker.... Who wants to deal with DMV?

you can tell the dealer you don't want to do a 4 year registration. it is worth it if you keep cars for a while though. especially sinc eGM has 100k mile warranties now
