MS Vista
Here's a program from MS that checks your computer to see if you can run it:

I need a new video card..
I'll probably run it at home later this year, but I'm in no rush seeing you have to wipe out your system and reinstall everything to use it.
DX10 support will be awesome though.
For AERO, make sure you have the following:
1) 2 GB Ram
2) 40-45 GB HDD FREE Space
3) 2.0 Ghz or better unless it's CD [Core Duo] or C2D [ Core 2 Duo ]
Video card isn't a huge issue but is always good to upgrade.. I was running Vista Ultimate on my Dell 710m Centrino M @ 1.7 Ghz with 1GB RAM and Intel Integrated Video Card...
Bottomline, Vista is a RAM HOG!!
OS 10.4 "Tiger" owns Vista for free... Notice how with Vista MS is trying as hard as they can to imitate Mac OS. 3D File viewing, shadowed and animated icons... who knows maybe it can be half as stable as OS 10, that would be an improvement over XP, not to mention ME.
I realize most people never have problems with Windows stability, but that is only because most never push its multitasking ability. Try running 3D Studio Max, AutoCAD, Illustrator, and Photoshop at the same time and see how Windows likes it... then open up an ArchiCAD project and say hello to lock up....
I never liked Mac's, that is until I started working for an Architecture firm in NYC. The run the office exclusively on Mac's. Since I have been working there, I have yet to see Mac OS crash.
Unfortunately, I am still running Win XP... but my Mac Book Pro is on the way

I've always been a Linux fan myself, but I don't find myself w/ enough time to mess w/ it anymore. Plus for work I need windows and I never spend time on the linux boot partition I have. I hope that these peripheral manufactures catch up and get some Vista driver's out soon as well as 64bit support. His box will use the standar x86 32bit build for those interested.

Board has "Vista-Ready" sticker (ATI Radeon X-1300) which also is on ATI's website as "Vista Ready".
Ran the MS Vista Adviser software again- again, it said I would have to change my graphics board!!! WTF???
Called ATI and they said the card isn't a problem- will handle Vista.

Today I won't even build/give somebody a pc unless it's got 2 gigs or ram in it. It's not like it was back in the day. It's only like $100 a gig.

I'd put more ram in just for ***** and giggles if I could but no real room thanks dell lol.
Long story short, I got this comp for 300 and its over 3 years old problem free, so I can't gripe about being behind the curve.

Thus why I like building PC's, you get what you need/want. You know whats in it and you know what your expandability/upgradability is. Plus the price is equivalent or better sometimes.
Software drives the industry and this is just the next step. For somebody who just needs e-mail and web browsing, you can't beat a $300 PC.
It's funny the person I'm building this for was over my house and he saw one of my computers and was like, can you build me one like that? He has a pretty basic machine, but didn't realize how fast and extravagant you can make a computer now, if your willing to spend a little more than getting an e-machine.
