Default Do you think my turbo oil drain is going to work?

Got the turbo oil drain done and im not overly excited about how it came out. Rookie mistake on the turbo build and i forgot to account for the length of the fittings and the thickness of the turbo drain flange

heres a couple pics, everything is -10 AN

there is a 4.25" vertical drop from the flange mating surface on the turbo to the level of the fitting on the timing cover, and it is 8.5" away on the horizontal axis. the pushlock line is horizontal for between 3-4"

so what do you think

you'll be fine for driving around and such. If you sat at 6k rpm for 20 seconds, you may fill up the turbo with oil before it all drains because of the increased volume.

If it happens, put a smaller restrictor on your feed. your turbo really doesn't need much oil.

as long as its draining above the oil level in the pan id assume it would be fine.

looks fine, should work
BUT YOUR TURBO REALLY DOES NEED OIL, and not a just a little bit, unless its water cooled, the oil cools it as well.
I would not put a restrictor on it, unless you want a new turbo.

My GUESS would be you will need a pump. Like mentioned above, the last this you want to do is starve the turbo. I had more drain angle and it was flooding the exhaust with oil. But then again, my SS has a nice rake to it aswell.

Not a real big deal tho I think turbowerx has the entry level pumps avail now, about $250 or so. Good luck!

You can gain some drop.....

I use 1/8 inch steel, and a AN weld on. So you would get rid of that thick aluminum piece and the threads would move up about 3/8 of an inch atleast. With that you can get rid of the aluminum AN to hose (the aluminum fittings crack eventually anyways) and go to a steel 90 (#10) (I use #12 even for more volume)

Anyways with the steel 90 (either 10 or 12) just put in in a vise and straighten it out a tad to get the angle you want. If you go a bunch heat it up with a torch. I do it with a well fitted socket on a 3/8 extention so the tube doesnt deform. I use push lock hose also.

You could raise the hose, get more drop and go to #12 at the same time for about $30.

oh but I bet it works ok the way it is.....probably.

Looks like it has a bit of an uphill run. I wouldn't want that on my setup.

i did some fitting digging and found some fittings that will give me some more of an angle towards the timing cover, but id like to try this since i already bought all the fittings and dont want to send $50 on more fittings just in case.

if it doesnt drain well i know itll smoke out of the exhaust but will it damage anything. obviously if it does work it will be changed immediately.

the oil restrictor idea doesnt sit to well with me. oil lubricates but also carries heat away from the turbo, i pretty much want as much flowing through there as possible

I fought the drain back problem for way too long and seeing that you want all the flow you can get to the turbo i would go with a scavange pump. Worked for my set up (tti) when nothing else would.

+1 on the update?

I'd be surprised if it didn't work... I really thought mine wouldn't work, but it did, and I like the look of yours more than I did my own....

THats more drop than I have and I never had any trouble. Just make sure the crank case is well ventilated. Back pressure causes more trouble than people realize.

After reading this I might have to change my current setup. I have much more of an angle on my TT setup and I was afraid that it still was'nt enough. I used a scavenge pump instead.
Since people are running similar drain lines, I just might try it aswell. Hope it works out well for you.

have about 200 miles on the car and no issues what so ever with the drain. i smelled burnt oil for a split second one time after idling down a VERY steep driveway, but it is working out very well so far

Quick Reply: Do you think my turbo oil drain is going to work?
