Default tuning w/ descreened maf

I have a 02 vert WS6, doing a sts kit right now, previous owner descreened the maf, have you guys had any problems with tuning with a descreened maf? going to run 5psi low, 8psi hi w/meth for now. Will prob max out at 14psi/heads/cam as next winters project.
thanks

descreening the maf i hear is actually better. it doesnt restrict the air from entering the motor.

but I have read that it helps "straighten" the air for better readings

I would hate to tune a STS car with a descreened MAF.Would be alot easier to tune with the screen. On FI the air can swirl in the pipes which can havok the MAF in false readings. The screen straightens the airflow alot.

the tuner I use recomends you take it out. I was told it was just there to catch big debris when you run with out an air filter.

Who runs without an air filter? The fins are there to help straighten the airflow. The straighter and smoother you can get the air flowing on a dry intake the better. The same reason you don't want to add one of those TB helical spacers or a Tornado.

I've seen a few racers down here race with out air filters. they say its less restriction.

Tuning some cars with out one can result in some less then spectacular tunes, depending on the piping design.

Agreed. On Corvettes, with the MAF piping straight into the throttle body, removing the screen doesn't seem to hurt. But, sometimes you can run into tuning issues with descreened MAFs when the air makes a turn between the MAF and TB (ie f-bodies, TBSSs, etc.).

the screen on the maf sensor is not there to act as a filter, it is there to direct flow on to the meter so you get a better reading. so i personally would not desceen it.

my car runs 13 psi with a screened maf no problem.

Most of the boosted cars max the maf anyway, so its more of a restriction with the screen than not so I have heard. Mine doesnt have a screen and its fine, but maybe it is an exception. Just get a SD tune if your really concerned--but this more money.
