Default High miles on 5psi should I?

im kinda new to the forums but i have a question.

i have a 1999 z28 with 177k miles on it and ive kinda been hung up on the turbo idea for awhile. i have basiclly everything i need turbo wise around me i just need to get it and its my daily driven and only car so it makes me even more sketched out. I was wanting to know if 5psi would be too much on a conservative tune and a good front mount set up.

the whole point of this is to ask if it would be worth it to let the turbo stuff wait and spend the money and go forged or will it be safe for a bit until i get some more money together to forge it later.

any thoughts?

Boost away Canbarelygo, boost away......

As long as the engine is in a good state of tune and has good oil pressure when hot, I wound not hesitate one bit to boost it.
FI engines are built on the loose side to begin with, and your 177k probably has those ring end gaps just about right for boost !!!

Good luck,
Jim

yea it has excelent oil pressure. and actually now that you mentionn that a buddy of mine who has had a few turbo cars said highmiles probably means its in the right area for boost.

im just concerned about the rods more than anything kuz im hugely afraid of trashing out the block.

is there anything i can do at all just to ensure my chances of it bein safe?

and btw i appreciate you guys' input

i am doing the same thing but i only have 120k. i have heard people putting rod bolts in, but that is another topic.

I couldn't decide what to do so i left it alone!?

Do a leakdown test and if the numbers are acceptable then go for it. If not the motor needs some freshening, maybe only top end but you need to check.

so maybe if it needs freshening up could i get away with gaskets and maybe some beefier valvetrain?

the car runs hard as it is im just tryn to make sure that 5psi isnt too much stress.
i dont really see ls1's with as many miles as mine so idk for all i know its not the original motor or it could be a salvage guage cluster.
it could have less miles idk but im shooting for if it had that many miles what all could go wrong because i have a very good tuning shop im gonna use and im gonna get it trailored there so i just need as much input as possible

Buy a daily driver before you do anything else. Once you start tearing the car apart and begin installing parts anything is bound to break or become lost. You also gotta factor in the amount of time it'll take to get it tuned and running up to par. The last thing you want to do in a turbo build is rush things and being that it's your only car, it's kinda hard not too.

i see exactly what your sayin and ive been thinkin about a daily for a bit now and i might have a decision there

suzuki samurai???? lol idk why but i dig them

well i go to school during the day but the plan was to realisticlly start maybe summerish or a bit before and have it ready to hit the streets mid summer or so. im workin on gettin some extra cash flow and use that to fund a daily driver of some sort.

this car is my first car though and i kinda want to make something special of it and ive always had a bit of a draw to turbo cars and i dont wanna junk this one out by demolishing the block and then parkin and forgettin about the car

why would a turbo be bad for everyday stuff?

it mainly gets driven to school and around town and to the occasional race when weather is good so would it be tough to live with?

Stock Samurais are ghey, but modded Sammys are pretty cool...I dig the one they built on 'Xtreme 4x4'.

Plenty of people drive their FI cars consitently, just make sure your cooling system is up to the task...seems keeping them cool is one of the bigger issues. At your target level of boost, you won't need any kind of extreme fuel system (probably just a pump and injectors) or top end on the motor, so you should be able to live with it just fine.

A conservative tune is typically the key to keeping your engine alive, as long as you mind that, I'd think you would be just fine.

yea i just think a well set up offroad samurai would be pretty sweet

yea i have a warlboro 255 i can get and i was thinkin 42lb injectors and i was gonna use as much header wrap as possible and gettin a transmission cooler just for safetys sake.

and im goin for a more conservative tune because yea i have to drive it everyday but everytime i start it dont wanna freak out because i heard a new noise ya know.

but also there arent really any turbo ls1's around here and they are few and far between in OKC so i was wanting something fast, unique, and overall driveble. all motor cars are everywhere. there are to MS4 cars within 5-10 minutes of each other lol
