no intercooler on big turbos
i got a s91 on a 408, looking to run 15-20psi on good gas. i was thinking about getting rid of the intercooler and just running methonal. i have a twin nozzle kit already and was going to try it. any have real world experience doing this. also i was thinking about goin e85 possible but for now it will be some 105 octane. my compression is 9:1. thakns

why do you want to get rid of the intercooler ?
if it is a drag car, i would ditch the intercooler and run meth with race gas
if it is a street car, i would defiantly keep the intercooler and spray meth just to be on the safe side

I have seen high power big turbo cars run no intercooler just meth . Seems to work fine.I often wonder how much intercooler really helps in a say 9 second timeframe. For a street car thing both are good but you do have me wondering if should bother on my 91 race talon. Maybe should try meth first see how my intake temps are and then decide if need one.If don't can save some piping and weight.
And not sure how much e85 cools things down..maybe people running it can comment. We have none where I live unfortunately. They are selling these flexfuel cars and have been for years now and we have like three e85 stations in my entire country and closest is like 2000 miles from me! And e85 is the hotness for FI although meth can work pretty good too.

i just dont know if i need it. the 91mm will be in its efficency range and 15-20psi is not that much for that turbo, i figured the air temps would be around 200 and then throw some meth and get it down to 100 or so.

boostntbss ran no intercooler with an s88 but on a blow through carb ls1 with e85. the intake was cool enough to put ur hand on it after numerous dyno runs, and ran no more than 180 degrees. you could try running e85 and do a 3 nozzle meth inj. 1 through the turbo and 2 at the throttle body.

In the scope of turbo parts, an intercooler is relatively cheap, better safe than sorry. Not to mention that if your meth setup ever fails, a cooler could be the difference between a bad run, and a blown motor.

I would get a air intake temp reading of the differences. think of how you drive the car when you try to get your readings.
I would say two nice nozzles and 110 e85 you should be good. are you having to pull timing much on your setup?

I think those cheap ebay intercoolers that lose like 1-1.5 psi for every 10 that passes through them hurts more than they help.
im going to run e85 and water/meth injection so I definitely dont need an intercooler. that allows me to keep piping down, and saves weight off the front of the vehicle.
plus, as someone already mentioned - when does a heatsoaked intercooler really start to work in a 9 sec run (or 5-6 secs for 8th mile.
btw, here is a guy running pump gas and water injection with no intercooler.

It makes sense to me. I always figured sure they would work on street especially talking air to air but did also think how well they would really work in a short 1/8 or 1/4 mile run. I guess they might help a bit more if you wer hotlapping. But if this guy can run that great with just 50/50 windshield washer does make me think he is right. You have theories and you have reality.
And I think may try out this theory in my 91 talon race car. Was going to be buying a big intercooler for it but think now just run alc injection like him and see how it goes.
It saves weight, plumbing ,money. Seems like win win.
On my street cars like my 99TT and my 97 talon of course have quailty huge intercoolers and alc injection.

im going to try the no intercooler. ill have a 3.5 outlet on the turbo go to a 4inch pipe then a 4inch to the 92mm TB. it will be about 18inch of pipe. im going to run 2 alky 14lb nozzles and eventually try a 50 shot of juice. The car is not much of a street car, it does have a spool. it really has two speeds, idle and wot. thanks again guys. im testing l92 heads that are oringed to see how it does

yeah i talked to the alky injection systems guy and he recommended a pre turbo nozzle and two post nozzles. typically he has seen temp in the 250-280* range come down to 130*, that will work perfect for me.
