Do I need a blow off valve with an automatic
my car is an automatic and from what i have heard is that you only need one to not lose so much boost between shifts on manual vehicles .
my grand nationals never needed blow off valves and i love the sound of the turbo chatter, plus I think they sound ricey

The reason you get a BOV, is so when you shift gears, your car releases the excess boost. If you dont have one, youll build pressure while you shift to another gear and the excess boost will surge into the intake manifold, then motor........

Yes you need one. Whenever your turbo is partially spooled and you let off the gas,the throttle plate closes, leaving nowhere for the compressed air to go. This causes it to backfeed into the compressor housing, where it stresses the shaft of the turbo. Not having one can lead to turbo failure.

GN's did have blow off valves, even factory ones. My bro had a turbo T and you could hear it when he let off the gas. I personally would want a blow off valve on ANYTHING with boost!

Hell ya, the valve is there to stop or slow down the compressed air going back through the turbo/supercharger. The tial doesn't sound ricey.

You dont need one if you get out of the gas slowly after boosting. compressor surge isnt that good for turbos, but if youre not shifting gears and continuously opening/closing the throttle, it wont hurt it. get one when you can afford to

You don't need one. I'm not running one any more and I'm glad. Caused me all sorts of problems in the past. I'd run one on a manual car for performance reasons but on an auto I'll always run without one.
I'm pretty sure that most turbos can take the stress, everyone thinks they are so fragile.

Then again, are you willing to risk a expensive turbocharger just because you are too lazy to install a bov? If noise is a issue, get a quiet unit. They do sell them.
And having a lot of excess boost just backed up in your intake cannot be good for anything.

I really don't see why you wouldn't want one. They serve a scientific function when mounted in the correct location and are springed correctly. Anyone that knows cars will know that a v8 with a blowoff valve means there's a pretty good chance the cars fast, so you get the added benefit of the cool/intimidating factor.
