Default How much boost before intercooler is needed

Hi my brother and i are building an ls3 418 stroker engine turbocharge is going into a 99 Trans Am but don't feel like cutting out a hole where the plate goes because i don't like the way it looks!! my question is how much boost can we run before an intercooler is required? We have an STS turbo system, some people dont like sts turbo kits but we got it for 1000 a complete kit!! can't beat that price!!

Intercooler is a temperature thing, not a boost thing. It's an intake air temperature question. The hotter it is, the more likely you are to have issues with detonation which will lead you to have to pull out timing. With a rear mount kit like that, you could use all aluminum thin wall tube for a charge pipe which would help cool the charge on it's way back to the front. And/or meth injection.

I thought that with more boost the hotter the compress air gets?? I was thinking on running 8psi would the air going to the intake be that hot to cause detonation? where can i get aluminum thin wall tubes?

5psi is about all you can do safely with that kit if you have the GT60 or 67, because IATs get too high. I used meth to get to 8 psi on the STS kit with the GT67. I would do some kind of intercooler...

You ideally want to keep the IAT's under 100 degrees. Might be real difficult in AZ. Easier in Alaska or Washington State

I would say 4-5 psi would be the max. If you dont plan on running an IC i would strongly recomend running water/meth for protection and to get the most out of your set up. Also you dont have to cut out the nose to get air to the intercooler on a F-body. Air is pulled up from the front air dams under the car. As cheap as intercoolers are there is no reason not to run one.

is not about the price of the intercooler, is where to mount it!! I was thinking on mounting one before the condenser or two small ones on each side by the turn signals!! look at the pic, what do you guys think!!

That would more than likely cause alot of pressure drop considering youre already a rear mount. Also that is a very small area for air to come in. Your turbo will be spinning 15psi at the turbo but the intake manifold will see like 12, maybe.

Why dont you just go with a big single?

You might want to look at these. They are small.

That's my second option installing a intercooler before the condenser if you guys think the 2 small intercoolers wont work!! I dont want the TA looking like this one!! If it was a camaro I wouldn't mind I think it looks like a grill. BadgeZ28 thanks that's a good link!! XtremeDime do you have a pic of your TA are you using a intercooler?

Get the right size intercooler and be creative. Mines a little smaller than most but my IATs are at ambient or below @8psi.

I believe it is their Mishimoto G-Line. I think the measurements were 24.5x11.75x3. Theres actually an open box one on ebay right now selling for cheap.

cant post links but search for "mishimoto intercooler." Ive pressure tested my cold side to 30 psi, so it should be good for anything you throw at it.

You could get a set of the Procharger twin intercoolers and use them.

10 psi is pushing on a LSX by a lot but it depends on what compression you are running. Even with meth/water thats on the high side of what most people would call safe. Somthing to keep in mind is its not all about "PSI" for example a GSX eclipse with the factory turbo running 18-19 psi may make 200 whp. A T76 on a LS1 at 9 pounds will gain about 200 whp from its factory 300ish. Pounds of Boost is not the key when making power on a FI set up but more about matching the right compressor size to the right set up since a larger compressor will flow more air at lower boost over a smaller one. Just my 2 cents.

That was what I was going to suggest. The LS1 F Body ProCharger systems can be had with two intercooler sizes, 3-1/2 and 4-1/2 in thickness. The newer D-1SC 8 rib systems come with the thicker 4-1/2 intercoolers. You can easily push 10 to 12 psi of boost with them, and you won't see them.

This diagram is from a Corvette C5, and in the LS1 F Body the intercoolers lay down, but same general plumbing.

Here is an older copy of the LS1 f body installation instructions. Bob

How much pressure drop would you get from running 2 ICs though?
