Default turbo smoke @ Idle

For whatever reason, my second turbo build has been hell.

My current set up has smoking issues at idle, after the truck has been completely warmed up and driven. Once warm, if you stop for around 30 seconds, it begins to POUR smoke out of the exhaust. Im running the same setup as several friends and im the only one with problems, im beginning to think its the turbo seals at this point.

Turbo is a BW s480, from forced inductions with apprx 500miles on it.

Im running 20-50 oil, as well as using a -4 feed, and a flanged 1/2 inch to -12 fitting at the turbo, to a -12 line that is practically vertical. To a 90* 3/8ths npt fitting in the pan, above oil level.

I did have a 1/2inch NPT fitting in pan, but moved it to the once trying to isolate the problem.

There is some what appears to be oil residue on a flange on the pressure side pre intercooler. I removed a post intercooler pipe, and its not oily at all. Its just a pain to remove the piece pre cooler, so I was waiting to do that.

I did drill a nitrous jet, to a .1 hole, and it didnt seem to much. Im not restricting it anymore than that.

Current PCV is just a breather on each valve cover, dont think it would be a problem yet. Worth mentioning is the fact I was blowing out the rear main under boost, so perhaps its more of a problem than im giving it. I do plan on moving to a variation of MightyMouses PCV. Maybe this needs to be my focus at this point?

Heres the old build thread if your bored from the PT side.

My car had the same issue but we had forgot to add a check valve. It was pouring smoke at idle I thought the rings were gone. If you took the oil fill cap off and held your hand over it for a couple seconds you'd feel the air blow out. We added a check valve and the smoking went away. Without the check valve we also blew a valve cover gasket out from under but it's all good now.

Had the same thing and it was also a PCV issue. Take your oil cap off and see if it still does it. Keep in mind that there is puddled up oil in there now so it may take a bit to clean out

Well it just has little air filters on each cover, I will try the oil filter cap tomorrow. Starting to sound like I'm right about pcv causing it. This motor is gapped quite loose at well. I haven't let it completely warm up and see if it smokes, it usually after driving/boosting I see this.
Might be worth doing a full warmup and see if she smokes.

Is the oil drain setup a straight shot to the oil pan?

My turbo doesn't have a band clamp on the cold side like yours manny.

Moze, this drain is a better shot than the old set up, I have pics but I'm on my phone right now. By no means does it have a flat spot on it

Gotchya...I had a similar issue and it was because there was a droop in the drain line and the oil was backing up into the turbo. So if your's is a vertical drop and there aren't any obstructions, I'm not sure what else would cause that.

I felt like it had a low spot with the tapped 1/2 npt hole, so I moved it to the other 38ths that was already drilled. Which, FYI was used with this same brand of turbo with the 1.32 AR, on this same dang motor. Altho I'm not sure what feed he used. Explain that one lol

Should finally be able to mess with the truck, I'm gonna try the oil cap to see if its the crankcase pressure.

Any other opinions?

Its plugged.

When I first set it up I tried to use checkvalves, like I had on the old 4.8 and those motor appears to loose for that without a catchcan and some vacuum

Try and put an oil pressure gage by the turbo and see what your pressure is. My truck smoked only when idling for over a minute. My turbo is a Garret center, but they told me to keep the oil pressure above 9 and below 40psi. I ended up with a .060 restrictor that kept it below 50psi revved up with 80psi in the engine. The turbo has been good for the last 70,000 miles with this system.

The restrictor has worked on my truck well, I used the pressure at the turbo and kept downing the size of the restrictor until I got close to the turbo companies range.

Yes, Im gonna call forced inductions later and see what they say on the borg units.

Thanks for the help Kurt.
