Default Any turbo'd stock 5.3l mpg results available ?

First let me say Hi and my body hurts from looking thru this kick A@$ forum for the past few hours. I just joined Today !

I just acquired an 88 monte carlo " To be my wifes DD " and I'm looking to do a stock 99' model 5.3l with a single or twin turbo set up, with the stock truck intake. I would like to see if there are any mpg results from people with this type of set up. It's a 3200lb car with a 2004r trans and I think a 3.73 gear "tbd soon" With a 26" tire. Any mpg numbers from a 5.3l carb'd or FI numbers are of intrest to me. I cant wait to hear some numbers.. Thanks ....

When I had a stock 5.3 and turbo on the truck I would get 22 mpg running 80-85 mph on the hwy. In town it would get right around 18 mpg. that was in a 5000 lb truck.

LS motor + turbo for a daily driver for the wife. You better get a car with air bags or leave off the turbo if she drives like my wife.

How fast are you driving to get those numbers? You have 3.08's and 28" tires too right?

Got those numbers when I drove from St Louis to Kansas City to race. Was on 25.7 inch Nittos with 3.42 gears going 55 mph at 2600 rpms. Now does 65 mph at 2600 rpms.

What kind of power numbers are you guys getting with 20 mpg. I was hoping to get somewhere in the 600+ range and would be really happy with 15 mpg. to be honest. Doing a 5.3 with a single 88 with a cam upgrade.

Default Thank You !

Thanks for all the replies guys. I'm sure I'll be on here alot picking brains on this project. I got to remove 4 broken manifold bolts from the heads and then I'll be shooting to collect the parts to fit this "junk motor " down in the car..Thanks again..

I get 20-23mpg highway in my 87 TA which has a cammed 5.3, single turbo, 2004R trans from a Monte Carlo (built it up with billet parts from CK performance) and a ford 8.8 with 3.55s. With a 28” drag radial and a billet 2400 stall 10.5” converter I cruise around 80mph and manage the 20-23mpg out of boost of course. I DD the car in the warm months and it’s better than my 18 Ram with the Hemi on the highway and way more fun to drive. Make sure you make all the mods to the 2004R so it survives and
Mine hasn’t skipped a beat up to 15psi or 700-750hp at the crank.

my converter is a lockup of course and at 80 I’m doing like 2200rpms.

your out of boost when your cruising so the mpg comes down to the NA 5.3 fuel usage and the gearing or what RPM your at at what speed abs what TPS. In boost your going to get like 15 or less if you like to make boost around town. But that’s the beauty of a turbo LS, reliable easy HP for fun and good MPG if you keep your foot out of it and out of boost. Which if the turbo is sized right would be less than 30% throttle and below 2500-3k in cruising but on light throttle.

I was going to suggest to the OP going to a 3.42 rear gear and a 28" tire and judging by what your saying sounds perfect.

No worries. It's an interesting thread. Especially for us daily driver types.
