My ls1 decided to tap out on the mods. What I thought was just lifted heads is something more. We surfaced the heads cleaned the block added new gaskets and head studs. Same result. Coolant in the oil. With that being said, looking for some advice.
The price difference is 1500 for the lq4 and 860 for the 5.3. I would be swapping over everything from my ls1. The 243 heads and f13 cam. Unless I change to a turbo cam or z06 cam. I was at 6psi with those mods on the ls1. Do you all consider the extra cubes and displacement a warranted reason to pay extra or should I save my pennies and just do the tried and true combo of rod bolts etc in the 5.3?

Well a friend of a friend will sell me a long block lq4 for 750. It has 148k, but I am not looking at this as my permanent motor. Will be cleaning it up a bit but figure I don't have to do too much. Will only throw 10lbs at it. May end up buying rod bolts though.

I personally have a lq4 in my car, but NA at the moment. I prefer the 6.0l for torque.I like it a lot and can't wait to boost it.now I paid $700 for mine with 100k on it. I wouldn't spend more than a grand for one. But question is,what are you going to do with the car? If it sees all street duty like mine I'd say 6.0.the lq4 from what I was told can be pretty reliable at 700whp with a good tune and the necessary items like rod bolts and sofourth. I am planning on 650-700 rwhp on 92 pump for mine.

Mostly a street car. With an occasional trip to the local drag strip. The car has the suspension and rear end for that need. I'll keep it under 700rwhp for sure. Deciding whether to use my 243 heads or get the 317s cleaned up and new valves.

I'd keep the 317s. No reason to bump the compression up.
Sounds like your shooting for the same power goals as I am. If I'm not mistaken should be able to make 700ish with 12lbs and a ls6 cam
