lq4 turbo opinions needed
OK so I'm going to finally Turbo my car this winter and do it on a budget. Car is a 98 z28 m6 with a stock lq4 longblock.I currently am running the stock ten bolt with 3.42s(yeah I know).car is a street car and only sees rolls and maybe 2 trips to the track a year.I more than likely going to do a rearmount setup since I'm
Not going to ditch my AC.I have read Zombies thread which has really good info and am planning on seting up my car similar to his.I'd like to see somewhere in
The 650whp range. Plans are to do a t78 with a small a/r. What insight can you guys give me
In boosting the stock 6.0l. Going to do a cam head and rod bolts.should the rings be regapped for this power level?
For fuel I was going to do some 60s with twin pumps and go SD.
Do you think these goals are reasonable? Nothing is set in stone just yet but want to be sure I'm make the right decision
Since ill be spending a couple grand.
Thanks joe

Yeah been reading and reading for the last few months and following along with other peoples builds.my main concerns are power output and longevity. I also wondering how much the ring gap needs to be opened up.

That's part of the reasoning for the t78. I could get a gt45
Off ebay and run that since people have had success with them but at most I will want to make eventually is probly 800rwhp.but that will be for when I blow this motor and go the 5.3 route

As far as ring gap, seen a article in HOTROD, and they open the ring gap to .28. It live to 1200HP! Twin 76's Still didnt blow, stock 5.3, I mean they took it apart, and gap the rings, and put them back in with a small rust spot on #7 cyl.

Good to know. I'm planning on freshening up the motor when I do it. Decided on my Turbo today after talking to a sponsor. Going to run the tc78. Plus looks like I'm going to go front mount. Found out about a killer new hotside coming. So I'm gonna start saving for it. Looks like I should be around 3k to build my kit including fuel.getting pretty stoked

not to change the topic but i read in gmhtp that the ebay cx racing turbo kit was going to get a overhaul, and any areas that were a pita before are all going to be fixed. from what they say its going to be a top notch kit and very cheap . has anyone heard anything about this?

While I have not heard that but from the info I was given I'd rather pay $1500 for a hotside that meets my needs(AC,radiator in stock location no melting PS lines) than $500 on something that will need work. I can build it my self and meet my goals but a wife and kid eat up free time. I'd be surprised if a ebay kit got further r and d on a copy cat kit

I would go with a large AR unless you are doing twins. As is discussed in another thread, smaller AR can lead to excessive backpressure and potentially valve float. The remedy to this is getting a larger AR or larger turbine and housing to keep backpressure down in the exhaust.
