Well, mild steel IS used in things other than exhaust...in fact I prefer to use all stainless in my exhaust systems. As for coatings, our local powder coating guy uses a ceramic that is baked in a 1200 degree furnace that can withstand up to 1800* F. But he has been looking into some porcelain coatings lately that are supposed to withstand 2500* and be absolutely tough as nails.

Silver or black grill paint from Home Depot....GOOD STUFF!!!!!
I have used it before and it lasts about a season of good solid driving.
The paint goes on REALLY thin; three coats is what I have been doing.
It is cheap stuff and once it dries and then is heated, it kinda bakes on from the heat.
All I can say is it beats paying $300+ to have a set of headers coated.
Also, if you scratch it, you just spray it and it looks good again!!!

Check out Performance Coatings in Auburn WA. I use their 2000degF coating on industrial applications and we're seeing 1600degF EGT's (cycle loads & sustained for as long as 1hr straight) in a highly corrosive (chemicals & steam) environment and 2000hrs later this stuff looks like the day we got it back from them.
They also have a couple different colors to choose from, and their prices are DAMN good.
Regards,
Kurt
