Default One Guy's Garage 71 Nova TT 5.3, The Quest for 7's.

The car is a 71 Nova. Ive restored it from the ground up over the last few years and made it into a "pro-touring" type car but with a very understated personality. Clean and simple is the goal but with mega horsepower and better handling than most of the stuff on the road.

The old setup was a forged 6.0 with a MP GT45. I was a nice street setup but I sold it to another guy on here and its going into a really nice GN. Now I cant live without a turbo car so this time I picked up a 2005 L33 5.3.

Here is the build list.

2005 L33 5.3 alum block, 799 heads, 137k on it. $550
ARP head studs
224/228 565 114 cam
LS1 intake
95lb Delphi's
Versafueler
Precision 7675CEA (billet wheel) .96Ar
Turbosmart 45
Tial knockoff 50mm

And here is the car:

The previous setup:

It had two LS4 manifolds flipped. The goal was to get the other manifold down and forward to clean up the setup a little bit. I took a 03-05 Trailblazer manifold (slightly smaller tube than a reg truck man) and had it angle milled to clear the steering box and then welded a v band on. It worked out well.

I had it on the engine dyno and it made 824hp at 16psi. We ran out of time and I didnt want to spend any more money so called it quits. This was on a stock shortblock. I had planned to run the stock shortblock up to 20-22 psi and shoot for 750rw but my wife convinced me to just do it right and build it a little. More to come soon!

I like how you merged the two pipes before the turbo and carefully integrated the wastegate too. Looks like a nice flowing design. Stout power on the dyno for sure for a stock engine. Looks good.

I am sure the front springs will like the reduced weight and the car will handle a little better too.

E85 and stock rails. Twin external walbros each fed by a -8 from the cell sump. Another pump will be added soon. Regulator is an Aeromotive 13101, feed in one side out the other and the return before the rails.

Im pretty pumped about taking 100lbs off the front of the car with this build. The SC&C front suspension kit kicks *** and the car handles really well, even with 235's. I'll prob switch to 9" wide front wheels and 275's next year.

Cool, thanks! Which exhaust housing are you running? I also picked up a PT7675 cast compressor wheel, I want to run e85 and a magnafuel 4303... I will be using a 4.8 for now with plans of a 370 or 408 for the future... I was gonna purchase a Comp Cams 224/230 .617/.610 that they call out for street remote mount turbo to put in the 4.8, but I will build it front mount very similar to yours. I am also gonna buy the Bosch 103 lb/hr injectors. If I can put off buying rails for now that would be great...

Nevermind I seen .96 a/r, I got mine just off fresh rebuild, it came with a 1.12. I think I know where a 1.0 is...

Looking good! Out of curiosity, why not go with v-bands on both manifolds? Hot side is great and I love the DEI wrap.

Yes, it was used on a diesel before. It is a GT4202R with a cast 76mm compressor and a Precision 1.12 housing, not a Garrett 1.15, and has a precision "race" cover. A guy launched a piston on a cummins and sent pieces through it, then sent it in to have it rebuilt, I picked it up right when he got it back. I know another guy who has a Garrett 1.01 housing he might sell.

Because I had the three bolt flange and it works well. I really like the DEI stuff too.

It is a pt7675 and a gt4202r at the same time?

Most Precision turbos are somesort of hybird/copy of a Garrett. Many of the parts are interchangable, so if it has been rebuilt it's very possible that someone used Garrett and Precision parts to make up a custom turbo.

SORRY, didn't know there was a difference... It is a GT4202R with a 76mm inducer on the compressor and a 75mm exducer on the exhaust. I also have a GT45R with a 83mm Precision billet compressor wheel and Precision cover, wheel clipped to 3.0" Protrusion and a 80mm turbine exducer with a 1.28 Garrett housing. I have a S400 75mm compressor and S400 80mm compressor both with 96/88mm turbines, I have the original 1.32 a/r t6, a 1.10 t6 machined to fit, and a 1.10 t4 machined to fit the large turbine also. All of these we have tried and ran on a diesel pulling truck, or on diesel street trucks... I also have a PT98 with a f-trim turbine and a 1.0 a/r housing we attempted to run twice, but couldn't keep it "lit" out of the hole.

The rules have always been a 3" compressor inducer limit, so I have quite a few close variations close to that I can use with little or no cost... I want to be capable of 1000 fwhp on E85 for now, with hopes of 1000+ rwhp a year or two down the road with a forged 408 or something similar... I realize the 88mm exhaust exducer is rather large for a 4.8 or 5.3, but I hoped to use the 80mm S400 on a forged engine or maybe even have it upgraded to a 88mm compressor wheel when the time comes.

No need to apologize, just wondering if there was something I was missing, I have a PT7675 and I was pretty sure a 4202R is a little fancier(ball bearing), but super close in wheel sizes. Standard 75mm S400 with T4 83mm turbine(75mm minor dimension as PT and GT) is almost identical to those two in both wheel sizes as well. All three very comparable it seems like.

Congrats on the new numbers! Im surprised stock rails will get you that far on E85. Did you get this new setup in your car yet? I finally was able to get the 76gts into my car. Im having it retuned on the 18th.
