Nova turbo Gear choice ?

Default Nova turbo Gear choice ?

OK guys I'm in the middle of my turbo build , car is a 71 nova ,sbe gen3 lq4, ls3 heads ,ljms stage 1 twin turbo cam, holley hp efi, D&d built t56 6speed which has the 2.66 1st and .5 6th, turbo is a BW s475 t6 1.32 AR, car is a street car that might see strip 1 -2 times a year. Originally I started build as a NA , but then decided on turbo as the car currently has a 9" with31 spline Moser axles Strange center,Detroit trutrac, and 4.10.....I know the gears need to go. I would like everyones input on gear choice.....right now I'm thinking 3.50 or 3.25. Street tires are 315/30/18 , for track I'd probably run some taller drag radials. Hp goals are 650-700rwhp.

Generally a gear is chosen to put you at a desired RPM at the end of the 1/4. I'd think with the T56 you would want to keep it out of 5th gear at the end of the track. What size tire would you run at the track?

I'd recommend finding one of those T56 speed calculators and going from there. I wouldn't go any higher than a 3.55 with that short of a tire on a turbo build. 3.25 is probably right on the money.

Got no idea on what tire I'd run at the track but i have plenty of room the car is mini tubbed and has full ride tech suspension. I actually have alot of room left even with the 315's..
I was also thinking 3.25.....but was also thinking it might make 6th unuseable unless I'm going 80+...but I guess that's no biggie

depends on what size radial you go with. i have 3.50's and use a 28" tire and it seems okay. if i could change gears for free i'd do a 3.00 or a 3.25

Thanks guys.....3.25 it is.....just hard to be sure being I was always a NA guy and those are some high gears for a NA car

Once that turbo lights off, your prolly gunna love having more gear. My research has also led me to 3.50s or even 3.25 should be fine. If its more if a street car n it has 6spd, you defly have options

You won't believe the torque the turbo setup will produce. I had a friend bet me $100 my car didn't have a 3.08 in it. I offered to crawl under to pop the cover and he backed out. (I let him keep his money)!

I switched from 3.25s to 3.50s a while back trying to help my 4.8 get out of the hole better. Over the last winter I built an ls1/s475 combo. On 12#'s of boost 14* of timing with 3.50s on 255 raidial in 3rd gear "th400" it will blow the tires clean off from 60 roll. Haven't had it to the track yet but on the street 3.50s are to much with any power and spirited driving.

60mph roll on burn outs sound fun....lol. I'm a ways out for that but slowly making progress!
