I'm not trying to argue, just offering another perspective and of course I realize the combination also determines these types of factors.

If he really said that then you need to find a new tuner or expand his viewpoint. You can run a lot more then 12lbs on pump reliably, especially with that little compressor.

And people have run that boost on std compression near 11:1 on pump. Obviously that does carry more risks....but many do it and for a very long time.

I too, see the importance of quench induced combustion chamber turbulence... but who knows? Maybe a little extra timing to make up for lack of burn rate along with additional air mass in the cylinder will produce a situation where the gains outweigh the losses before detonation becomes an issue?

Curious to hear the outcome.
With a turbo motor you won't always have that extra mass in the cylinder to negate good quench. I will still pay attention to it when I build my motor.

I know of a Ls6 vette running 8psi of boost. Kept making power at 19*. Put aftermarket rods and pistons in it to drop the compression .5 and now doesn't take timing or make as much power now. I need to figure out the quench difference on that one.

Good point. True on any motor, really. A lean cruise tune pulling decent manifold vacuum for instance, where timing might already be in the 40º+ range.

Hope we get some results to review.

Twins, a killer air to water and RPM would be my approach if I were trying to get the highest HP on pump gas

Hmm, how would that sound?
Hey ____, these two guys on an internet forum said you can boost way more than 12 lbs. on pump 93, in fact up to 20-25 lbs and that I should find a new tuner or open you should open your mindset...
Annnnnd now I have to find a new tuner because of you dicks lol. ; )

Then take your money elsewhere! Not one time have I had a dyno tune be faster at the track then a logged and properly adjusted tune. Give the engine what it wants not what some dyno tuner says it needs. Whenever people stop listening to these retards with keyboards is when people might actually start going fast. People claim there is a shortage of tuners but really it's just a shortage of people that don't want to learn how an engine works.

You make really good points about 1/2 of the tuning issue. If you scale the tune to bypass MAF limits, you have to scale a lot of auto trans tables. For a personal vehicle this may just be another interesting part of tuning, but I can imagine this being very time consuming on a professional level. BTW, I have done 2bar tuning with a fully enabled MAF, and I do prefer it if the build allows for using the MAF. Sometimes, however, this just isn't a practical solution.

A properly done dyno tune "should" be capable of besting a track tune. The problem is that most people go to non load bearing dynos with different conditions than would be found at the track, as well as dyno operators who just want to give the customer a big number. Dynos may be one of the most misused tools in the automotive world.

Even a load bearing dyno isn’t going to apply the same types of loads and stresses and actual ¼ ½ etc pass will put on the engine. All dynos are just to get a rough tune, the real world tune always needs to be adjusted from the dyno tune if you want an optimal setup.

This is what I've always thought and been told as well.
With this gentleman I data log while driving on the street and send him the scans.
He addresses the tune in two stages, first stage is idle and cruise, then WOT pulls.
Whether it takes two tunes or 10 he doesn't stop until I'm happy with how it runs.
I've been using him for years and other than the waiting between scans I couldn't be happier, car runs really hard and drives fantastic, even for having a slightly over sized cam.

I disagree, I know lots of guys running turbo LS cars and all are passionate about the hobby and would love to be able to tune their own cars but there is a hefty investment up front, plus all the time spent figuring things out.
I work 10-12 hours a day and have a very busy personal life (ha ha) so tuning my own car at this stage of my life just isn't feasible, doesn't mean I don't want to learn.

you really oughta start dabbling. tuning has been the most rewarding part of turbo LS stuff so far...even more than fabricating and engine building.

What is the 'hefty investment'? No way I would pay some random guy $500 every time I needed a tune.
