Winter build, 86 c10 short bed
you have to wait longer after the last color coat or the clear can "flush" the clear in spots.
Anyway, the bed and the cab changed places yesterday, borrowed a heavy duty roll around
thing (sup. to move jet engines) and was easy to move by myself, even on a gravel surface.
I heard guys were burning up the wiring on the stock 87 sending units with bigger pumps, so
I cut out the wiring, drilled the hole to fit a #6 bulkhead fitting, ran the wires thru it. I will fill the
hole with JB Weld, or some epoxy $hit. Today hoping to trial fit the engine, using both a turbo
400 and 4L80E.
for the first mockup, then i'll use a 400 and mock it up. I have a 400 ready to go, so when ready
if I haven't built the 80E i'll use this one. These mounts allow a truck AC comp.
to fit, never know if I might add AC (not likely), but trying to design around it. Had an old
Patriot D/S header, wouldn't fit the Nova, but fits great on the truck, might use it instead of
a truck manifold.
Tanks are a PITA, have to lift the body to get to the fittings, not a problem yet since its only 4 bolts.
Prob should have rethought that part of it, lol. Waiting on semi warm and try day to do some sand
blasting, some small parts and lower control arms. Looks like I might have to mount front end temp.
to see how the intercooler will fit, unless I can find a square body I can look at and meas-that would
save a ton of time. Trans rebuild kit should be here this week, then I can knock that out.
so will do the cab. Brackets made for the inner cooler, need to paint the core support and prob.
not run the plumbing until it is installed, kind of hard to judge its actual location w/o the fenders on.
Rebuilt the lower controls arm, new springs, drop spindles, tube. uppers. Started back on the trans
rebuild (80E) every time I work on it find more damage (direct clutch, sprag, main shaft, bushings,
etc). Was able to get used parts off Ebay, hopefully have everything needed now. Made up a
bracket for the throttle cable, mounted the fuel reg, so now I can finish plumbing the fuel lines.
Dan weather keeps kicking my azz, either snow, rain, or cold, sucking up the garage fuel oil, lol.
site. Down side to the setup is using an iron block, you have to drill one mtg. hole
in the outer boss, (PITA getting it straight) and you don't have another boss like
an alumn. block. This alt has a boss that allows a mount on the side of the block.

so I pulled the trans, suspected the converter was hitting the FP bolts. Using the .400 spacer and flat FP.
I meas. the ARP bolts I was using, the head thickness was .361, so I ordered ARP 244-2902, the head was
aprx. .255, plus a larger dia. head. Cured the problem. Finished running all the fuel lines, started on the exhaust,
finished the cross over, and have the 4" down pipe now under the car. Prob order the Dynomax straight thru
muffler. Switching to a 9" rear, but for now using the stock one, so didn't want to waste money on a new
driveshaft. Picked up another 80E, came with a driveshaft. I pulled the front long yoke off, that and an adapter
u joint, worked perfect with a shaft I had laying around. Prob finish sanding the clear coat and shoot some more
on this week, then wire it up. Shooting for May driving, but I don't know, lol
to be done, but idles decent, has good oil pressure, alt charges, the good stuff, lol
Lawn mowing, the wife's garden, cleaning the ext. of the house, I knew that would butt up against the build, lol.
Ran up against some things I didn't expect, one was the trans I built. When I tried to move it under power, it
seemed to lock up going forward/backward. I was hoping it was the 1st/rev. band, but wasn't, so the trans had
to come out. I found enough parts to install my old turbo 400 that was known good, until I could tear down the
4L80E. Finally did that, but not sure yet what it was, but some susp. Anyway, the elect. dash I got doesn't seem
to want to work with the fuel pump senders, reads off. Been working with the Co., but seems the Square Body group
hasn't had good luck with this dash, lol. If I have to I will just buy a 90 ohm. gauge and install it somewhere.
All the wiring is almost comp., everything works as it should, pumps work, fans work, all computer operated.
Big milestone yesterday, backed it out of the bay with the lift, moved it into another bay under its own power, lol.
Should have the hood sanded and buffed this weekend, then that frees up the whole bay for the bed. It gets
the oversize tubs, then painted. Pretty soon I'll order all the interior, dash, seat cover, door panels, if I win the
lottery, lol. Doing Drag Week is still on the radar, set it up to run like a 12.0-12.5, just to have fun.
think out to good was the hood safety catch. It will hit the IC'er so I temp removed it. Looking at some
kind of quick release cable or something. I have about an 1" of space before it hits the IC'er, not sure
if theres enough if I mod the latch. Prob just go with a cable. I put the IC'er where it is so I could
reuse the ex. holes thru the core support for the pipes.
