I took out the overload and the next one, if it needs it i'll put in the overload. I'll prob just
save up for Cal Tracks, if the spring were on the bottom I might make something, but who
knows, if I get bored, lol.

After driving some the newness has worn off on the exhaust noise, lol. I orig ended the
4" under the cab with a straight thru muffler. I bought some 45's, did some meas. so I
could get it past the axle, still need one more 45 to get it to the rear bumper, big improvement.
But it picked up a drone in sec. gear, hopefully that changes with extra pipe.
I want to put the 80E back in, but since I didn't really find a problem why it locked up, decided
to tear a 4wd unit down to build as a backup. It was in good shape, could prob. just add the
2wd tail shaft, plug and housing and have a working trans, but this far down but crazy not to
rebuild it. If I put the other in and it still fails, I will have this ready to swap.
And the beat goes on, lol.

do you do any internal mods to your 80e's?

i usually just slap the HD2 kit in and go.

I have pretty much just used the HD 2 kits, the experienced builders do other stuff, but
I have done some of the suggested mods on one, and some say to leave out that pressure
relief mod on the HD 2. I think the main thing on the HD 2 is to make sure you have a flat
case and VB because of the sandwich plates, people claim you can get cross leaks. I
make sure when drilling the plates to have then squeezed tight, you could get a little
burr and cause a leak. I was looking at the Jakes and CK Perf. kits, they use a single
plate and block off the acculm. and I think dual feed another way.

^ right they leave out a piston apply seal or something

im sure you read I'm struggling with a no 3rd or 4th gear thing. i see why most folks just pay for a built trans.

I did the jakes vb/shift kit on my 4l80 and it does set the trans up for dual feed on second. It works amazingly well but you can only do it if your tearing the trans down because you have to drill a pressure relief hole in one of the drums so at high rpm centrifical force on the oil doesnt start to apply the clutchs. It works really well. Same mod that was so popular on th400 years ago since hard part wise a 4l80 is a th400 with overdrive. Basically. very basically.

Finally got around to finishing the tailgate, so the truck can be whole again. It was pretty beat up.
so I didn't put a ton of effort into it, might pick up a better one later. Still have to cut and buff it.
Putting the 80E back in this weekend,
hope I fixed whatever was wrong with it. Fighting a bug in the engine, been driving me crazy, runs good
cold, but when warm runs like its missing 200 HP. Feels like a bad plug, valve, etc, you know its not'
right, just hard to explain. Data log shows all systems go, nothing jumps out. Plugs look good, the cyls
I can get to have good comp., vac. is steady. Its just not crisp like I feel it should be.
Just trying to decide if elect or mech. Been thru the tune, looking at temp related options, just nothing
I see. I have given up on trying to make Drag Week, it was prob my last shot of doing it (missed last
year also). Shame cause it was as close as it will ever be to where I live, and I have run at all the tracks.

Wow!!! This thing is beautiful!!! You as well as truck doug certainly do some amazing work!! Seeing your guys' builds really gives me the confidence to try new things, building transmissions is one of them, one of the few things left I need to just jump in and have a go at! Reading through your thread here, it seems as if we have a very similar story with our trucks! With the exception that you are keeping yours look factory, and nice, while mine has no hood, a turbo dump coming out the fender that runs down the side of the truck (cobra inspired) and I'm trying to keep as much of the patina as possible. I really like breaking necks going through traffic. People are always like WTF?!?! Cracks me up every time.

As far as your turbo setup goes, our builds look very similar as far as turbo mounting and hotside setup!! Very well done. It seems as though you may be running into the same problem I am, does it feel like it completely falls on its face? What RPM does it happen at? (Is it consistent where it happens?) As I have not figured out my problem yet, I may not be much help. But I'm betting we may have a very similar problem. I'll keep you updated on mine and maybe we can hash out our issues together!

Beautiful truck!!

Well I found my power problem, took it to a cruise last night, just happened to notice
my D/S header was missing the bolts to the cross over pipe, kind of hard to see down
there. Stuck one bolt in just to drive it home, could def tell the power is back. It was
prob confusing the hell out of the computer, lol. Strange, these bolts have come loose
before, thought I had replaced all of them with lock washers, this time I will use lock nuts.

I like pinch nuts for holding the turbo one, maybe that type of locknut would work for ya?

Is this the connection between the header and crossover? Have you considered Vbands?? That's so awesome you found out what your problem is!

I wanted to get an idea where the truck was before swapping back to the 4L80E trans.
Made 9 lbs boost, 4200 RPM, 70% throttle (thought I had floored it, need to verify I get 100%)
With the old switch pitch 400 13" converter, didn't want to wipe out the thrust bearing, lol.
Anyway, installed the 80E, which I built orig as a backup to the first 80E for Drag Week.
It would lock up, never really found out why, will dig back into it later. Anyway this 80E
seems to work OK, gets all the gears, need a controller but running it man. for now.
The old back doesn't like lifting the trans anymore, so I resort to the engine crane, makes
life easier. Hopefully this week I can start on the 9" rear, soon as I get the housing ends
I'll take the housing to my buddy and get it narrowed, order axles, finally have the correct pinion angle.

The picture of the engine installed looks very clean, excellent job on the details. Looks like a blast to drive, good luck with your transmission moving forward.

Thanks, really responded to the new trans, since it now has a converter with stall, lol.
Man. shifting kind of sucks, esp with full pressure, so installing a controller now.

Not a lot new, installed my trans controller, much more fun to drive not having to man shift it.
Working on the engine tune a little, took it out for a little testing, and didn't expect it to down
shift like it did and it went up on the rev limiter, wasn't expecting that since it hit 9 lbs boost earlier
at 4200, I wanted to creep up on it. I was data logging it, so when I looked at the log no boost,
didn't feel bad though, lol. Found a pipe pulled out at the intercooler, so had to pull the grill and
hook it back up (something else to address this winter). Any way, painting I can do so so, but hate
the color sanding and buffing, so treated it to a buffing by a friend who does it, now shines better, lol.
Prob redo the hood, it was pretty beat up, or replace it. Added a bed cover, def hides the ugly bed, lol.
Getting it ready for a cruise to the beach in 3 weeks, then prob shut it down for the winter. Upgrades
will be the 9", axle flip, cal tracs, maybe AC-in order to install AC, the intercooler would have to go,
been thinking of that in favor of a meth kit, allow more air to the radiator.

That's a sharp looking truck! Count me jealous. It took me almost 2 years to call the salvage yard to come get my old '87. Like loosing a friend, lol.

Going into winter I have a list of changes, one will be to reduce the cab noise. I want quite, lol.
Haven't been able to use the power, old open rear held it back, so I narrowed a 9", have to install
it and weld perches, shock mounts, once the pinion angle is set. Using 10" rims, 295/65/15 ET
Streets. Prob change around some plumbing also.
