Default Boost And Timing

I have a forged LQ4 twin 70s this is my first time tuning a boosted motor. The AFR is around 11.4 -11.6 on pump gas 12psi boost I don't have knock sensors so it won't pull timing. So the question is how much is to much when it comes to timing. What would be a good starting point. And is there a never go there point. Thanks

As much as it wants... This topics been discussed to death, might try the search.

The only answer worth a damn is to start out extremely low with timing, Set your max desired boost and square away the AFR. Then work your way up adding timing while watching the plugs. Any other suggestion is a total guess.

Advance it til it blows up, then pull back a bit.

i'd leave the spark NA until 105kPa and yank it down to about 10º when I hit 8-9 psi. maybe bump it back up after peak torque.
start conservative and read the plugs. the timing mark on the strap is very reliable way to see what the motor wants

consider spraying some water meth too. it can really add a margin of safety with pump gas. all it takes is one bad tank of gas and kablooey!

5deg is pretty low unless it's quite high CR.

EGT is probably like 3800, with 5 degrees of timing.

twin 66s
i pulled up my last log and its actually 6.5 degrees at 22psi. i just recently upped boost from 18 and the higher end of my tables arent quite there yet so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

what should timing be on a stock 5.3 at 22psi on 93?

Whatever gives best power/torque without any risk of detonation. You'd need to tune it o a dyno to find out what it "should" be for your build.

I wonder if my 16 degrees at 6psi is too low. Seems like with nitrous you don’t retard it as much (what like 3-4 degrees per 100hp?) so maybe I really need to be around 18-20 at 6psi. And maybe go to 16 at 8 psi and 14 at 10.

What do the plugs look like? Stock cam and ~9:1 CR?

What do the plugs look like.....broke record lol. Youre likely light on timing but read the plugs.
