Should it be clattering at this low boost?

To race you? I may as well bring an empty bag so I can fill it up. You need to gain 20MPH over the winter and before you start with the excuses its full weight lol

Yup, ***** slow as hell. Both cars run solid 9 teen 1/8th miles! Its hit or miss if I can beat a Prius on any given day.

Since this thread is so far off track (I don’t care,...think it’s funny) I might as well ask. What do you guys think of this boost strategy and my theory. Say I leave the line on a couple lbs. ramp it up to say 6 at the top of first gear. Second gear gets ramped to 8-10lbsand then third goes up to 12-13lbs. My theory is I’m only running high boost for maybe 3 seconds at at time. So that should be safer?

It'll help IAT's and probably help with combustion temps so it can't hurt. Might help with traction too.

i just know supposedly they don’t last long at 12lbs or above. So I was thinking the limited time at that pressure may help keep it together until the other motor is done. Haven’t started even collecting parts for it yet so that may be a while lol.

What do do you guys think about getting a triple disc converter and locking it in third gear? I figured it would pick up mph. Right now I have just a regular yank power adder series 3400 so I can’t lock it. Wonder if it would kill the converter if I did it once or twice at the track for a hero pass? Then that would let me know if it would be worth locking up. I’d get a baseline mph first.

Stock trans? I wouldn't lock it. Not worth the gains.

nah it’s a built trans. Got good **** in it. That’s why it’s holding like it is. I build transmissions, bern doing it for about 20 years. Mainly 4l60’s. I’ve had pretty good luck getting them to hold under 750hp in a 4000lb car. It’s the converter I’m concerned with. I break or burn the trans, I’ll just fix it. No worries there.

I have a Yank3600 in my car and had no issues with it. I still wouldnt lock it up unless youre going for max effort.

Heck ya...I wouldn't be worried about it above 12 psi if the tune is good and you are using meth. Sure all the time beating on it will not last forever, but just turning it up at the track it would probably last a long time if the tune is good with some meth. I'm kind of in the same boat as you, but I decided I'll just buy a short block when I need it. The wait time on them is usually within 6 weeks for common builds so not a big deal for a car that is just a toy.

4l60e guy here also....
I wouldn't lock a single disk converter in a 4l80e either at that power level. Has nothing to do with transmission type, just converter.

From my understanding there is no reason to lock the converter unless you are blowing through it..... circle d told me my triple disc is good to around 800 unlocked and 1000 locked.... said I would never hurt it locking it up under power... actually dared me to try and hurt it lol.... so in short if you are starting to blow through the converter at high power levels then lock it up and it eliminates slip?

yea I won’t be beating on it with 12lbs. No meth yet. But that’s planned. Depends on how much time before the track opens again. I picked up an aluminum 5.3 already for $500 but it doesn’t have the good rods. My plans are to upgrade this one while I’m running the ls1 but try to make it last. Then when the 5.3 is done I’ll put it in the car and let it eat. Then if the ls1 is rebuildable (if I don’t hurt it) then I’ll build a 383 out of it. Never ends does it?

supposed to make good mph gains on a turbo car. Heck my 3rd gen picked up mph. It wasn’t as fast as this car is. You could feel it pull harder when it locked, felt like warp speed lol. Not really but it felt like it pulled much harder. That car was 3400 with me in it. Made 447 and 479tq old school 383 solid roller, trick flow r’s ported by me and a TPIS Mini ram and haltech computer. Think it trapped 119-120 then locked 122-124

Ya locking the converter on the big end feels like you just hit another 100shot of nitrous with the boost. It's will really pull when it locks.

1/4 times are all about the little details. If you want to get better times, you abuse the **** out of your drivetrain. This is simple fact. If you want your components to last a long time, then don't. The GTO is a pretty heavy ride, and if you build transmissions you understand what that means. Also, when your axle stubs twist, they are a nightmare to get out. As a side note, if one of them breaks, the resulting one wheel peel will burn out your factory limited slip clutches in less than a second. Then again, I have a t56 car, so my drivetrain was doomed from the start.
